This is serious [expletive]. Something needs to be done for pitchers; there is no protection.

Boy-o boy. Terrible. But I can't see how anything can be done to prevent this. At least, without sacrificing some other aspect of the game. Chicks dig the longball, and so do the owners, so you can forget about changing the bats or balls.

You can't do anything about it really. It's one of the hazards of the game. I will say that we can and should do something at the lower levels - mainly make sure the aluminum bats that are being used are well regulated. They are taking steps but more needs to be done imo - those bats are still too live.

Watched the video. Gruesome. Perhaps pitchers could wear batting helmets (or some facsimile specially designed to prevent this sort of thing). But pitchers get hit by liners in other places as well. Remember Chris Young of the Padres getting hit in the face by Pujols. It broke his nose and for a time he couldn't smell. But protecting the head takes priority I think.

I heard they're talking about kevlar liners for pitchers' caps. Sounds like a good start.
