The highest paid pitcher on the last WS-winning Yankees team of their mini-dynasty (2000) was cone at $12mil. Clemens was only $6+ mil. Bernie made 12 mil, Jeter made 10 mil. There were only three players at/over 10mil. The way that dynasty was constructed was on draft/develop and the keen signings of guys like Brosius and O'Neill who were not exactly perennial MVP candidates when New York scooped them up. They won WS on $54 mil and $66 mil payrolls, years when Baltimore was outspending them.
The New York Yankees people claim to hate--the Yankees of salary largesse who just buy trophies--doesn't exist. When they started buying elite (but mostly over the hill) players they stopped winning trophies. The last truly amazing Yankees run was built differently, and that's what people hate them for--winning a bunch of trophies, the same reason people hate the Cardinals.

I hate New York, and that probably more than their payroll has more influence on my Yankee-hate. Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants, Rangers, Knicks ... all of them.

I hated the 2009 Yankees and those A-Rod teams, but respected those 1990s teams.33anda3rd wrote:The highest paid pitcher on the last WS-winning Yankees team of their mini-dynasty (2000) was cone at $12mil. My nephew plays high school baseball at Scott Brosius field. The base of the right field wall is 8 feet lower than home plate. That seems like a good reason to hate the Yankees.

Re: The GRB Opponent Hateability Index
You are correct that they didn't buy many trophies, but they bought a whole bunch of wins. The next twelve years after 2000 when you say their dynasty ended, they only finished first in the ALE nine more times and made eleven playoff appearances total. People are going to hate success regardless of how it is achieved. Casual fans don't want to watch the same teams make the playoffs every year. Way more people hate the Cardinals now than they did right after the 2011 WS and no more rings have been won in that time.33anda3rd wrote: The New York Yankees people claim to hate--the Yankees of salary largesse who just buy trophies--doesn't exist.
