Agreed x3. It's hard to remember now, but in '07 and '08 his fastball had great speed and movement and he was very effective. It's not unreasonable to speculate that a guy who had previously never thrown more than 79 innings in a season, then shot to 191 in '08, might have arm trouble the following season. And it's impossible for us, as fans, to know how much of his '09 suck was due to arm trouble.cards2468 wrote:I completely agreeHungary Jack wrote:I actually think Welly is worth a flier. I think the big increase in workload in 2008 showed itself in 2009. If he's healthy, he can be effective as a swingman.

If the Rocks sign him, I will try to be in the LF stands with my glove whenever Welly starts at Coors.Eephus Speed wrote:A fly ball pitcher with a below average K rate in Coors. But, yeah, it's possible that Wellemeyer could surprise.

They're saying now the Giants are the "front-runner" for Wellemeyer.

The Giants have offered a minor league contract to free agent righty Todd Wellemeyer, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Wellemyer has also attracted interest from the Mets and Rockies in recent weeks. The 31-year-old batted elbow issues last season and finished with an ugly 5.89 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 122 1/3 innings for the Cardinals. He told a St. Louis radio station last week that he is in great physical shape.

Re: welly to rockies?
Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said that the club has "no interest" in free agent right-hander Todd Wellemeyer, reports Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com.
The Rockies were floated as a possibility in recent weeks, but he'll have to find employment elsewhere. Wellemeyer, 31, struggled with shoulder problems last season, posting a 5.89 ERA and 1.77 ERA in 122 1/3 innings for the Cardinals. Anything more than a minor league contract with a Spring Training invite would be a surprise.
