Our toast is in fact on fire, a charred foul-smelling lump smoldering at the bottom of the toaster.

And then forgot to unplug the toaster before we stuck a fork in the toaster to get the charred mess out.....

Not only have they played themselves out of the playoffs, but we've lost Wainwright's and Carp's last 3 starts putting Wainwright out of CY contention, and Votto has knocked Pujols out of the triple crown lead, with Votto now leading in 2 of the categories. What a difference the last couple of weeks have made.

I hadn't looked at the standings in a couple of days.

Five games out of the wild card? Seven behind Cincinnati?

Yeah, they're toast. Oh well.

The standings are a lot easier to take if I go back to my pre-2009 decision that the Cardinals had to build for 2011 because they couldn't build anything better than a fringe postseason contender before then.

Course, that does mean the pressure is on for next season ...

Maybe this will be a wakeup call that we can't keep filling out 60% of the roster with complete garbage. But I doubt it. No money is getting spent until they know where they stand with Albert.

I'm already pre-bitter that our 2011 doesn't look much better than 2010. Carpenter and Wainwright are performing as well as anyone would expect them to. I can't imagine anyone but his mother thought that Garcia would be so awesome. Holliday and Pujols have bashed as well as they were expected/hoped to. Best case scenario is that all five repeat how great they've done in 2010.

Then what?!

Oh, but we get to look forward to more Ryan/Skip/Molina takin up a third of our batting order with their 650 ops'ing, crappy bunting, first-base-sliding, 1st pitch popouts, and turtle-speed running to first. And Lohse, good God. 12 million a year to a guy I would rather never make a single start ever again wearing the birds and bat. Maybe Freese stays healthy all year and we get a 750 ops and more consistent defense. And God Forbid, we get 500 PAs out of our stud youngster CFer.

Maybe I should have put this in rants. Oh well.
