Re: Garcia to the DL
I guess the only thing missing is for him to rest six weeks, come back and throw two innings and be yanked to have the surgery he originally needed.

Re: Garcia to the DL
If you would have told me before the season that we would have lost Carpenter for 2/3'rds of the season in Spring Training, Adam Wainwright wouldn't make a miraculous and immediate comeback, Berkman would play in 13 games before the trade deadline, and Garcia would get shut down in the first week of June with a labrum tear, I would have told you that we would be lucky to finish .500.
I think it's time to re-evaluate our season. We probably have too many obstacles to overcome and make a serious run in the playoffs. I definitely wouldn't trade prospects away to try and re-tool. I would just try to get everybody back and healthy and see how things shake out.

The original diagnosis was impingement, which, though not great, is treatable (in many cases, with surgery that shaves off the tip of the acromium to give some more space in the joint. I had it done and it did wonders). In the long run, the best you can do is try to manage it by strengthening the muscles behind the shoulder.
This very likely does not end well for Jaime.

3 years and $23.5M after 2012. Sigh.cardsfantx wrote:or us...what are we tied to him now for? 4 more years or something like that?

At least a few here have been worried about his mechanics, and were pretty concerned with the extension. Looks like those fears came true.

That's a bit strong. The experts he's seen -- and they're name guys Yocum and then Andrews -- aren't even talking about surgery. They are still talking about him pitching this year. It's way, way too early to start talking about him like he's done.Hungary Jack wrote:3 years and $23.5M after 2012. I hear you, but this is not a good sign. Shoulders just don't heal well, especially torn cuffs. Hopefully it is very, very minor. At this point, I think he's probably a time bomb. Our time bomb.

Re: Garcia to the DL
He may/may not come back this year. That's not really the issue. Imo, the issue is that, as HJ points out, the Cardinals are on the hook for 3 more years and $23.5 M and can with zero confidence project what they're going to get from Garcia.Fat Strat wrote:That's a bit strong. There's a reason Garcia, at the age of 25, has had to have his UCL replaced and now has tears in his shoulder. He's always had bad mechanics that were likely to cause injuries. If he continues to pitch, regardless of when he comes back, his pitching is going to continue to cause injuries and we're already talking about injuries that will shut him down for good....with 3 years left on his deal. Maybe it all works out, I hope so. But from here on out, and really even before that, the contract is like skiing through a minefield.
