What players interest you?

Post by Michael »

For me it's the Cub's Rich Hill. He's put up great minor league numbers:

05:

Code: Select all

Team	League	W	L	ERA	G	GS	CG	SHO	SV	IP	H	R	ER	HR	BB	SO	GO/AO	AVG
WTN	SOU	4	3	3.28	10	10	0	0	0	57.2	42	22	21	9	21	90	0.83	.200
PEO	MID	1	0	1.13	1	1	0	0	0	8.0	5	2	1	0	0	12	1.60	.179
IOW	PCL	6	1	3.60	11	10	1	0	0	65.0	53	28	26	11	14	92	1.08	.218
Minors 11	4	3.31	22	21	1	0	0	130.2	100	52	48	20	35	194	0.99	.208

06:

Code: Select all

Team	League	W	L	ERA	G	GS	CG	SHO	SV	IP	H	R	ER	HR	BB	SO	GO/AO	AVG
IOW	PCL	7	1	1.80	15	15	0	0	0	100.0	62	22	20	3	21	135	1.12	.179
Minors 7	1	1.80	15	15	0	0	0	100.0	62	22	20	3	21	135	1.12	.179

At the MLB level in 05 he got pounded, in 06 he started out slow but he had an excellent 2nd half:

Here's what BP has to say about him:
The Cubs` system is rightly praised for the amount of pitching talent it cultivates, but Hill`s skill set probably perplexes even their pitching gurus. Although Hill finished first in the minor leagues in K/9 and third overall in total strikeouts, his velocity fluctuates from the high 80s into the low 90s, which is a huge difference if he`s going to make it as a starter. What he does exceptionally well is fool people with his curveball. The hope is that the addition of a cut fastball this past season will keep him from being sent over to the bullpen, but Hendry`s willing to wait and watch before slotting him one role or the other. That patience may be necessary, but Hill`s six months older than Mark Prior, so he really isn`t a young gun.

Considering Hill's age (27) I see this as a make or break season.

Daric Barton.

Its been a while since we had "good" discussions regarding Mulder trade.

Mark Prior. I think the division hinges on him.

I'm always intrigued by Oliver Perez. He's got enough of an arm to be a very good pitcher, but he's got to pick up the pieces of some really bad years.

SD's Chris Young. Maybe it's just because of his dominating playoff performance against us (which I was at  ), but he seems like he has a bright future.

On the Cards, I think I'm most interested now in Wainwright. This could be a fine breakout season.

Other players:

1. Alex Gordon: does he make it onto the Royals out of ST? Does he breathe life into that franchise?

2. Matsuzaka. There's undeniable excitement about this guy - lots of mystery about his stuff, his background. Myths abound: "I heard he throws a ball that disappears before it gets to the plate. I heard he threw 37 consecutive complete games one year." The downside is that, playing in Boston, it will be impossible to avoid news on him this year.

3. Chris Young (padres) was a great choice. This guy could be a Cy Young candidate this year.

4. Ryan Howard - I like the guy even more after seeing HBO's real sports profile on him. Big family values. His parents handle his finances and, honest to God, his mom gives him an allowance. It's not every day someone hits 58 homers in their first full season. In fact, that's probably a "never." It'll be interesting to watch how he follows it up and adjusts as pitchers definitely will be adjusting to him.

I'm intrigued by a few of our guys. Kip Wells, has Duncan figured him out and can he stay healthy? Wainwright, how will he adapt to the rotation?

Ichiro, he'll be dealt at the deadline, w/ Seattle out of it, and contract talks going no where, due to Seattle's losing ways.
