Pujols is the best player in the league--a bit more than "above average". Haren is an All-Star, and a fringe Cy Young candidate that came out of our system. Like I said, Wainwright was acquired in a trade that involved 2 previous Cardinal farm hands going to the Braves for 3 players in return. Duncan has been an above-average hitter in MLB for over a full season now. Yes, the jury is out on Ankiel, but he hit 43 HR's last season--I think most would envy having a guy like that come out of their farm system.

The system hasn't been nearly as bone dry as you're making it out to be. The roster right now is severely hampered by Rolen, Carpenter, and Edmonds (reported to be an "ownership decision" to re-sign). That's over 1/3 of the payroll that was producing worse/less than Ryan Ludwick and Joel Pineiro last season. You can't do much when 1/3 of your payroll isn't doing squat for you.

Why exactly are people trashing the Russ Springer signing so much? He followed up a respectable year with a season where he was utterly dominant (The best context-neutral reliever in our pen last year per Prospectus's metrics and still just behind Franklin when taking leverage into account), he and Isringhausen are practically twins stuff-wise, and his ZiPS projections are stellar (2.95 ERA, best on the team). He's a loyal guy who likes helping out youngsters. Yes, he's old, relievers are volatile, and he tends to get lit up when he's pitching with a major injury, but if there is such a thing as a middle reliever who is a good bet, it would be one with above-average velocity and a good enough secondary pitch to get by when he doesn't have the good fastball (The cutter in Springer's case).

What was the date of the Dave Karaff article?

Perhaps he should send his resume to the new management.

Thank you.
I'll second that Thank You.

The bullpen is setup to be pretty solid and one less area we have to worry about. Sure we might be able to throw a cheaper guy in there, but w/ so many question marks in other places, why not go w/ a proven guy here. Plus its not like his salary is really going to prevent them from making offseason or midseason moves.

Sometimes, it pays to have solid contributors in spots and not just all-stars or young, cheap guys.

I am among those who aren't thrilled about Larussa comin g back. However, I respect those who have a different view point.
