Re: Shannon Stewart
.445 OBP and .255 SLG? That'd be quite a feat, but absurd hypotheticals serve no purpose.
EqA is only available to subscribers, correct?
What would an EqA-based generator say is the ideal batting order? Would it say basically the same thing as that quote that greenback posted?

Except, NL managers don't.cpebbles wrote:You would, unless you were following that little tool, which is widely regarded as an untested little conversation-starter and nothing more. You just ideally wouldn't pay a big premium for players whose only assets were a decent OBP and some speed.Maybe I'm dense. Why wouldn't you put the hitters best at getting on base ahead of your best hitters. Even if Pujols hits leadoff why wouldn't you want a guy who excels at getting on base ahead of him (9th)? Base cloggers?
#1 hitters in the NL averaged 4th in OBP on their team and 5th in OPS.
#2 hitters in the NL were (tied for) 5th/6th in OBP and 6th in OPS.
The top three OBPs averaged out to hitting at the "4.3" slot in the lineup...or, almost exactly in the middle. The top three OPSs also averaged out to hitting in the "4.3" slot.
The most ABs (or even the ABs directly in front of your best hitter) are obviously not going to the hitters best at getting on base or even to "better hitters."
The best hitters are sitting in the middle of the lineup, and they've put the "best" of the worst remaining hitters directly in front of them. Frankly, it's not that theoretically sound. I agree with the "toy tool" that there's certainly a possibility that you gain more by giving your top three hitters ~50 more ABs per year (while simultaneously reducing the # of ABs of some of your mediocre hitters by 100-175 ABs) than you lose by "weakening" slightly the quality of hitters ahead of them.

I'd sign Milton Bradley for four million bucks.but if he did you would not hit him leadoff on this team. that's the crazy part.

You hadn't mentioned his smile ratio.picasso wrote:This mythical, magical player who has a .445 OBP with a 6.0 pitches for plate appearance and plays LF is fighting for a roster spot. Yeah he's probably going to the Hall of Fame, but he can't cut it on this team.
