Not a great team, but a fun team. And consistent beyond belief. On April 10, the Cardinals lost their third straight game to go 1-3 on the new year. That would be the longest losing streak of the season until things were wrapped up at game 160.
They got on base, they ran, they pitched, they fielded, and then they ran some more. What a fun team, and what a great World Series win.
ditto
O Smith and B Sutter are in the HOF from this team
1949, another near miss for the Cardinals. I think they would've beaten the Yanks in the WS. It's a shame that the Cards/Dodgers pennant race will always be overshadowed by the Yanks/Sox race..
Herzog supposedly told Stuper he didn't think Stuper was a major league pitcher. I remember wondering what that was about, the man had a 3.36 ERA! Now I look at the walks (55 in 1982) and the strikeouts (53)... Stuper has one of the rare $5 pages at Baseball Reference.

I don't even think it was the best Cardinals team in the 80's (1985) and maybe not even the 2nd best (1987). Maybe it's just that I was more involved as a fan with the '85 and '87 teams (I was 9 and 11 for those teams, but only 6 years old for the '82 team).
No you're not crazy, but I think I should point out that RC21* is also a cheesehead. Only a cheesehead would run down the '82 Cardinals!
But yeah, the '85 team was definitely the more impressive team in my opinion.
