It just all depends on the right deal. Right now I would be hesitant to move him for anything less than a comparable starter (which seems dumb) or an impact bat (which I drool over). I don't see how you can move Lohse though and get either of those things. Lohse isn't going to a team out of the race and most teams in the middle of the war aren't going to move impact bats.

I wonder just how much breaking news the breaking news thread will get. The line between buyer and seller used to be much clearer than today. When the format was different, if you were at .500 or struggling to get there you were a seller, pure and simple. But now? Heck .500 teams win divisions, and if you are a good winning streak away from .500 and in the correct geographic quadrant you probably are a buyer. Add to it the cost of established ballplayers and what prospects now mean to teams (some more than others) and it's an ingredient for some pretty blah trade deadline news.

The Cards are not going to get the big time prospects that some people are suggesting they will get, if they trade Lohse. Not gonna happen. Kazmir and Liriano deals are few and far between. We know what CC went for. Lohse will not fetch close to that.

This team can compete THIS year. Lohse is the type of pitcher the Cards should be looking to buy, not sell. Somebody who can push them over the hump THIS year.

I guess we turned this into a Lohse thread, instead of a breaking news thread.

A lot of the debate at least in some places(here somewhat) is whether he's worth trading away for prospects now or worth waiting for the picks we'll get when he walks, what's better for the team long-term, etc. I don't really think they can get any impact MLB-level players for either now or the future.

I'm not sure this is completely accurate. I mean, in this year's trading season, we've seen last year's AL Cy Young winner traded (CC), one of the better pitchers in the AL traded (Harden), one of the better hitters in the NL traded (Tex), a future HOF'er traded (Pudge), and a couple rumored deals that have some pretty big names (Griffey, Bay, Manny, Hermida).

If anything, in the old, old days (pre-FA) you didn't have as much player movement, because you weren't worried as much about salary dumps and not being able to sign a pending FA. I don't remember the 80's being a huge marketplace each year either. Maybe I'm just not remembering correctly.

Yeah. This has been one of the bigger trade seasons in memory. Huge, really. And I can't think of more than 1-2 top notch prospects who have been moved so far. It seems like deals are getting done without the top 30 prospects in the game, which is surprising.

agreed. I've seen people talk about how little trades get done, well, this season there have been a lot of huge trades.

I would sort of have to feel for Lohse if something like this happens, though. Having a great season after coming in with very low expectations, playing for a contending team in an awesome baseball city - I certainly wouldn't want to leave. I know it's a business, and I realize this is a perfect deal opportunity, but for me, the thought of finding your groove only to be quickly removed from the environment that made you successful is pretty sucky. Like I said, I completely understand the rationale behind a (possible) move like this one, but this is just me looking at it from a different angle.

Meh. If Lhose wants to stay he should fire Boras and beg for an extension. But he won't, and shouldn't.

They've just started to happen sooner. July 31 is no longer the orgy of deals that it used to be.

I'd liken it to Christmas. It used to be that there was Christmas Eve, and Christmas, and people started paying attention to it around 12/15. Now? Christmas is a de facto two month holiday that starts the day after Halloween.
