1910 In front of a full house, the Browns spoil the White Sox debut at Comiskey Park beating the Southsiders, 2-0. The new ballpark named after the owner replaces the 39th Street Grounds, home of the team since 1900.

1920 Leaving Robison Field in mid-season, the Cardinals make their debut as the home team at Sportman's Park, also the home of the American League's St. Louis Browns, bowing to the Pirates, 6-2. After signing a ten-year lease for $20,000 annually with Browns' president Phil Ball, the team moves six blocks to be able to play its home games in a modern ballpark.

1941 In a rain-shorten nightcap against the Red Sox, Joe DiMaggio ties Wee Willie Keeler's 1897's major league record consecutive game hit streak of 44 with the help of a difficult decision by the official scorer. Red Sox third baseman Jim Tabor makes a poor throw, but the 'Yankee Clipper' is given a hit by New York World Telegram's Dan Daniel.

1958 Fooled by the Cubs relief staff, Giant rookie outfielder Leon Wagner is tricked to look under the bullpen bench instead of the rain gutter 45 feet away. In the meantime, Tony Taylor makes it around the bases.

1962 In the second game of a doubleheader sweep of the Indians, the White Sox (Juan Pizarro, Nellie Fox and Al Smith) become the first team in major league history to record three run-scoring sacrifice flies in one inning. Three fly balls to Gene Green, two which are dropped by the Cleveland right fielder, sets up the unprecedented occurrence.

1982 Considered a questionable decision, Cal Ripken is moved from third base to shortstop by Oriole manager Earl Weaver.

1990 As Comiskey Park celebrates its 80th birthday, Yankees' hurler Andy Hawkins throws a no-hitter, but loses the game to the White Sox, 4-0.

1997 After hitting a bouncer down the Astrodome's first base line, Tim Bogar comes all the way around to score when Manny Ramirez doesn't play the ball after it comes to a stop under the bullpen bench. The Indians outfielder, unaware of the park's ground rules, begins signaling to the umpire that the ball is out of play as the Astros infielder circles the bases for an easy inside-the-park home run.

1934 At Wrigley Field. veteran ump Bill Klem's delayed call of the infield fly rule leads the Cardinals to protest their game with the Cubs. The game is suspended with two out in the bottom of the 7th inning with the Cubs ahead 5-1, and will be completed on the last day of the month with St. Louis losing with the final score of 7-4.

1941 On sweltering day in front of 52,832 fans at Yankee Stadium, Joe DiMaggio breaks Wee Willie Keeler's 1897's major league record consecutive game hit streak of 45 with a three-run homer off Red Sox hurler Dick Newsome.

1962 Dodger pitcher Johnny Podres ties a National League record with 8 consecutive strikeouts in a 5-1 victory over the Phillies.

1969 Reds' pitcher Jerry Arrigo ties a major league mark when he hits his third Brave batter in the second inning of a 9-4 victory. The Braves also tie the major league mark by hitting five batters in one game.

1977 For the second time this season, Jim Spencer has an eight RBI day. The White Sox first baseman's two home runs helps to beat the Twins.

2005 In one of the most severe penalties ever imposed by the commissioner’s office for on-field behavior, Kenny Rogers is suspended for 20 games and fined $50,000 for actions which sends a cameraman to the hospital and launches a police investigation. The veteran southpaw, who will appeal the MLB decision, is selected by his peers to be a member of the American League All-Star squad scheduled to play next week in Detroit.

2007 With skipper Joe Torre watching from Yankee dugout, Roger Clemens, throwing eight innings of two-hit ball of a 5-1 win over the Twins, becomes the eighth pitcher to record 350 career victories. The New York manager was the catcher for Warren Spahn's 350th win making him a participant of the only two occasions that a pitcher has reached the milestone since 1928.

Happy Independence Day, GRB!!

1900 Approximately one thousand people in the crowd of 10,000 fans attending the game at West Side grounds celebrate Independence Day by firing pistols into the air. Chicago beats Philadelphia in 12 innings, 5-4.

1908 With two outs and an 0-2 count in the ninth inning, Giant pitcher George 'Hooks' Wiltse loses his perfect game when he hits opposing pitcher, George McQuillan, with a pitch. Wiltse still keeps his no-hitter intact as the Giants win 1-0 in the tenth.

1911 Armando Marsans and Rafael Almeida become the first Cuban natives to appear in a major league game as they both make their debut for the Reds. Appearing as pinch hitters in the eight inning, Almeida strikes out and Marsans singles in the 8-3 loss to the Cubs at Chicago’s West Side Grounds.

1932 Bill Dickey punches and breaks Carl Reynolds’s jaw after the Senator outfielder collides with him on a close play at home plate. The American League suspends the Yankee catcher for 30 days and fines him $1,000 for his one-punch fight.

1939 It's Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day at Yankee Stadium and ‘the Iron Horse’s’ uniform number 4 will be the first ever to be retired. After emcee Sid Mercer informs the sell-out crowd the man of the hour is too moved to speak, Gehrig changes his mind when Skipper Joe McCarthy encourages him, and delivers the keynote address in baseball history describing himself as "the luckiest man on the face of the earth".

1976 When Tim McCarver passes teammate Garry Maddox on the bases he loses his grand slam, but the Phillies still defeat the Pirates, 10-5.

1985 In a 19 inning game, which goes until just before 4 a.m. the next day, the Mets beat the Braves, 16-13. After the 6 hours, 10 minutes game, the 1000 fans left in Atlanta Fulton County Stadium are treated to pre-dawn fireworks which awaken and frighten many of the ballpark’s neighbors.

2000 Becoming only the third player in Cardinal history to homer in his first career at-bat, Keith McDonald pinch hits a home run in a 14-3 victory over the Reds. Eddie Morgan [1936] and Wally Moon [1954] are the only other Redbirds to accomplish the feat.

2001 The Brewers' new home, Miller Park, continues to be jinxed as a parachutist breaks his ankle when he misses the opening in the retractable roof and lands on a beam several hundred feet off the ground. Another member of the Sky Knights Sports Parachute Club missed the stadium completely.

2001 The fifty people stranded on the Ferris wheel ride at Comerica Park for two hours during the Royal-Tiger game are rescued by firefighters and emergency crews using a cherry picker and a fire truck ladder. 1898 Lizzie (Stroud) Arlington becomes the first woman to play organized baseball when she pitches for Reading in the Eastern League. Some believe she also pitched in Atlantic League exhibition games after being hired by Ed Barrow, the league's president.

1929 At the Polo Grounds, the New York Giants become the first team to use a public address system.

1937 In the first game of a doubleheader, Frank Demaree goes 6-for-7 (three doubles and three singles) helping the Cubs edge the Cardinals, 13-12, in 14 innings. The Californian adds two more singles in Chicago's 9-7 victory in the nightcap.

1945 At the Polo Grounds‚ 18-year old Whitey Lockman homers in his first major league at bat. The lefty-swinging rookie centerfielder goes deep off George Dockins in a 7-5 Giants loss to the Cardinals.

1947 Striking out as a pinch hitter against White Sox hurler Earl Harrist, 22-year old Larry Doby of the Indians becomes the first black to appear in the American League. The former Newark Eagle standout will play in the major leagues for 13 years amassing 1,515 hits, just three less than Jackie Robinson.

1953 Blanking the Pirates at Forbes Field, 2-0, Robin Roberts hurls his 28th consecutive complete game. The Phillies right-hander has finished every game he started since beating the Cardinals on August 28, 1952.

1961 Cardinals' first baseman Bill White hits three home runs and a double. The infielder's offensive output helps the Redbirds rout the Dodgers, 9-1.

1987 The A's first baseman Mark McGwire becomes the first rookie to hit 30 homers before the All-Star Game as Oakland defeats the Red Sox, 6-2.

1991 In an unanimous vote, final approval is given by baseball owners for the Rockies and the Marlins to join the National League in 1993.

1998 Juan Gonzalez becomes the second player in major league history to go over the 100 RBI mark before the All-Star game. The Rangers' designated hitter major league-leading total 101 RBIs is second only to Tiger slugger Hank Greenberg who had 103 in 1935 and finished the season with 170.

2002 Baseball legend Ted Williams, considered by many the greatest hitter in the history of the game, dies of cardiac arrest at the age of 83. The first-ballot Hall of Famer, who was a lifetime .344 hitter, won MVP and Triple Crown twice, led American League in batting for six seasons, and hit .406 in 1941 during his 19-year career with the Red Sox.

That item about Greenberg above reminds me that when he had his 103 RBI before the all-star game in 1935, he didn't make the all-star team. The AL went with a couple of guys named Gehrig and Foxx instead.

This sounds like a pretty big deal.
KInd of puts the whole 56-game hitting streak in doubt, doesn't it? Of course, after it ended he then hit in 16 straight games, so it might have been a 73-game streak.

I don't think you hit in 56-straight games without a little help from the official scorers.

1929 The Cardinals scored ten runs in the first and fifth innings defeating the Phillies, 28-6. The twenty-eight runs set a National League record for the most runs scored in one game by one team.

1933 At Chicago's Comiskey Park, the first ever All-Star game is played. Babe Ruth's two-run home run helps the American League defeat the Senior Circuit, 4-2.

1936 After the first batter is thrown out trying to bunt, Bob Feller, a 17-year old farm boy from Van Meter, Iowa, strikes out 8 consecutive batters in three innings during an All-star break exhibition game against the Cardinal's' Gas House Gang. It is the Indian's rookie's first appearance in a major league uniform.

1941 A center field monument dedicated to Lou Gehrig is unveiled by the Yankees. The memorial is a tribute by his teammates of their beloved captain who died last month of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

1949 At Crosley Field, Walker Cooper goes 6-for-7, including three home runs and three singles, five runs scored and ten RBIs, to power the Reds over the Cubs, 23-4.

1966 Tying an American League record, Boog Powell knocks in 11 runs in a doubleheader. In game one, the Oriole first baseman hits two home runs, including a grand slam, two doubles and a sacrifice fly to drive in seven runs in the Orioles 11-0 victory over the Kansas City A's and in the nightcap he adds 4 RBIs.

1986 At Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, first baseman Bob Horner becomes the eleventh major leaguer to hit four home runs in one game. Three of the four homers, however, are solo shots allowing the Expos to still beat the Braves, 11-8.

2000 Homering off Reds' hurler Osvaldo Fernandez, Cardinals' Keith McDonald becomes only the second player in history to hit a homer in his first two major league at-bats. Bob Nieman of the St. Louis Browns is the other player to accomplish the feat (9/14/51).

2003 Keeping his promise to dye his hair if his last-place Devil Rays won three in a row at any point this season, Devil Rays' skipper Lou Piniella becomes a blonde. Last night's 3-2 victory over the White Sox gave Tampa Bay their first three-game winning streak since last September.

2008 In the ninth inning of a tied game at Yankee Stadium, Manny Ramirez, appearing as a pinch-hitter, upsets the citizens of Red Sox Nation when he strikes out on three consecutive fastballs thrown by Mariano Rivera, without swinging the bat. Citing knee pains, proven to be baseless by MRIs ordered by the team's management, Boston's disgruntled outfielder had asked to be left off the starting lineup for the critical series with New York.
