Baseball History
On this day in 2004,
Jason Isringhausen blew a save (imagine that! ) at Shea Stadium. The Cardinals lost 5-4 despite a home run from Mike Matheny.
The loss dropped the Cardinals to 20-19, 3 and a half games behind the Houston Astros.
The Cards won 85 of the remaining 123 games.
I remember a fair amount of squirming and hand wringing among the faint of heart in Cardinal Nation in mid May of '04.
I note a similar amount of discomfort among the squeamish now.
What happens from here? 105 wins? I doubt that.
However, IF Carpenter, Ludwick and Ankiel return to health and stay in the lineup and there are no other significant injury problems, there will be some echoes of '04 around here.

Clearly it's getting stale in the clubhouse.

Re: Today in History...
I was at this game. Izzy walked two guys (including the lead off guy) before Kaz tied up the game with two outs, on a flare single. What a brutal loss.
It was also the same night Randy Johnson threw his perfect game (and MLB's most recent).

The only difference between '04 and '09 team that I can see is that the '04 team was really good.

Re: Today in History...
For me, 2009 is just the Year of Pujols & Rasmus. I'm having a blast watching them both in the same lineup. I hope I'm watching them in the post season, but it's May. Wake me up in mid-July. Hopefully they're not out of it by then.

5/18/2000: Mark McGwire passes Mickey Mantle into eighth place on the all-time home run career list with 539. 'Big Mac' goes deep three times as the Cardinals beat the Phillies, 7-2.

It was also the year of the "Our Season is over (in terms of making the playoffs) Saga...

The division race was already long over when Larry Walker arrived.TimeForGuinness wrote:This.jim wrote:The only difference between '04 and '09 team that I can see is that the '04 team was really good.
