I take back every bad thing I've ever said about your mother, Joel Pineiro.

2 hit complete game shutout, on the road. 22 Groundball outs tonight.

Code: Select all

Name SO/9 BB/9 HR/9
Joel Pineiro 4.2 1.2 0.2
Christy Mathewson 4.7 1.6 0.2
Jo-el has turned back the clock a full century on the NL.

Contract year performance ftw? Even if the economy stays the same, somebody out there will throw money at Jo-el if he keeps it up like this.

Jerry was posting just as the GDT was locked, so here's his last post:
Jmodene wrote:Looking at the stats, Pineiro didn't walk that many guys *last* year - just 35 in 148 2/3 IP. This year he's walked 12 in 92 2/3, counting tonight's 1 walk in 9 IP. At that pace, he'll have 20 at the 148-inning mark, so he *has* improved even on that.

But the real difference is that he's cut his HR rate by a huge amount - he allowed 22 last season; this year he's allowed 2. Keeping the ball down, indeed!

100 pitches for Pineiro tonight and his second CG SHO of the season. Game Score 83, his second-best GS of the season (he had 86 when he shut out the Cubs). He's had 9 games with GS of 50 or greater, but is 5-4 in those nine games, which implies that he's pitched in some bad luck this season; his ERA is down to 3.40 on the season, second among the starters to Chris Carpenter's 1.53.

The others: Wainwright 3.58, Thompson 3.89, Lohse 3.99, and Wellemeyer 5.53.

It was pointed out on the game thread that keeping the ball down and not walking anyone has made the difference for Pineiro this season.

Looking at the stats, Pineiro didn't walk that many guys *last* year - just 35 in 148 2/3 IP. This year he's walked 12 in 92 2/3, counting tonight's 1 walk in 9 IP. At that pace, he'll have 20 at the 148-inning mark, so he *has* improved even on last year's mark.
