And the thing is, the other dudes on that list were middle infielders, glove guys. Craig is a 1B/RF who's not all that great a fielder. He really did plumb new depths this year.

I wonder how much tolerance he would have gotten if he wasn't a World Series hero.

Kyle McClellan has retired from baseball.
The 30-year-old right-hander made the announcement Thursday on his Facebook page. McClellan registered a 3.79 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 387 1/3 career major league innings. He hadn't appeared in a game since 2013 because of injuries to both of his shoulders.

Don't you think we'll be seeing more pitchers retiring earlier? The way they throw these days. Motte's probably done, Rosenthal may be close as well. Siegrist...

One of those things is not like the others. Rosenthal is 24 years old. I certainly hope he is not contemplating retirement at an age where most pitchers are just entering AAA. Siegrist is 25.

Motte, on the other hand, is 32 and just went through TJ surgery as a 30 year old. It is conceivable that he's not the same after that, and could be done. But all in all not a bad career for a guy who didn't start pitching until age 24.

Genetics. Some guys can throw until the cows come home. Others can't.

Even in retirement, sportswriters can't let go of The Narrative.
