Remember how signing Albert was part of the Angels trying to become the top team in the LA market?

It has to be pretty grating on the Angels to watch Albert have his worst month ever and have the Angels in last place...while by contrast across town Matt Kemp is simply on fire and the Dodgers are in 1st place. I know, it could all change by the end of the season. The Dodgers may fade, and Kemp's hot streak certainly will cool at some point...and, yes, Albert will get going at some point...but this can't be what the Angels' front office envisioned when they signed Albert. Albert may never even be the best hitter in LA, as long as Kemp is with the Dodgers. Who knows.

Add in the positive buzz for the Dodgers with Magic Johnson's group trying to buy the team. Did the Angels' window to grab the mantle of top team in the market already close? I get that these types of things are a marathon and not a sprint, but I can't help but wondering.

It's odd he needs more of an adjustment to the AL after 11 years in the majors than he needed an adjustment to the majors when he had his debut.

That's a good point. I took for granted unfamiliarity with some of the pitchers he's facing.

Seems like the frustration is starting to show.

Quote:
“I’m not pressing, dude,” Pujols told me. “It’s baseball. If we would be 15-3, then nobody would be talking about pressing. When a team is struggling, everybody’s looking for excuses.

“If people want to look for excuses, you can say whatever you want. You can write whatever you want. I couldn’t care less what you write. To me, it’s (important) to stay focused. It’s a long season. Concentrate on that and not on the things people are saying.”

From the article above. Found this really interesting.

Statistically, this is one of the most shocking power outages in baseball history. Since 1974, only five men began a season with 400 or more career home runs and then failed to homer in their first 80 at-bats. According to STATS LLC, they are: Willie McCovey (1974), Carl Yastrzemski (1981), Eddie Murray (1996), Ken Griffey Jr. (2010) and Pujols (2012).

Of that esteemed group, not one averaged more than 16 home runs per season for the remainder of their careers. Griffey, then 40, retired that year without hitting a homer. In a possible Pujols parallel, the ’74 season was McCovey’s first as a Padre after the Giants dealt him to San Diego. He went on to hit 108 home runs over the next seven seasons.

But he was flying under the pitchers radar as a rookie. at least for a while.

Not saying that this is the end of Pujols dominating the opposition, but when he does reach that point in his career, it's going to be ugly.

Just think if Pujols really is older than what he says he is, the only person that for sure knows is Pujols himself. Maybe, just maybe he signed somewhere else so he didn't hamstring the Cardinals for the next 10 years. It will come out in a tell all book at the end of his career when he is trying to make good with the people in St. Louis again.

I wish Pujols the best. Hope he returns to elite form. But people in the Angels' front office have to be terrified right now and I take enjoyment from that part of it.
