Weird:
Quote:
FIRST BASE
Joey Votto, Reds: 4,475,180
Lance Berkman, Cardinals: 1,516,737
Freddie Freeman, Braves: 1,462,586
Brandon Belt, Giants: 1,291,982
Ryan Howard, Phillies: 873,526

So...why have 1.5 million people voted for a guy on the DL who has played what? 10 games this season?

Another weird thing, Tyler Green is an option at second, but Freese is not an option at 3rd (tho you can write in, of course).

Buster Posey, Giants: 3,335,982
Yadier Molina, Cardinals: 3,119,530
Carlos Ruiz, Phillies: 2,448,942

Does that same right?

Does that same right?

For the same reason 800k voted for a guy who hasn't played a single game this season?

Somebody on another forum pointed out that Posey had better numbers than Yadi in the first half of 2010 but Yadi got the fan vote for that AS game. Plus with TLR managing, there's no way Yadi doesn't make it anyway as a backup. So I'm over it.

But what is that reason?

But what is that reason?

Stupid fans voting for players on their favorite team or based on reputation would be my guess. I'm sure if the Phillies were doing better as a team, more Phillies fans would be voting as a whole and a bunch of them would be voting for Howard. I don't remember when the last update was but Freeman was actually ahead of Berkman in votes. I wouldn't be surprised if this recent 5 game winning streak influenced more Cards fans to vote for their own guy over a division rival.

Starting with a baseline of roughly 800k "dumb" votes, then factoring in the Cards' relative success (plus the WS win) and Berkman notching early votes (100k? 200k?) when he was playing, 1.5 million votes doesn't seem too far fetched.

I'm just wondering how Howard (and Utley) are even listed on the ballot when both of them were expected to miss lots of time. I'm sure Utley has probably garnered a bunch of votes as well. It's just that the NL SS race is more competitive than the NL 1B race so Utley got nudged off the top 5.

You may be talking about the paper votes, but when I voted online Freese was an option for third.

Stating the obvious here but.....

The AS game is nothing more than a popularity contest.

Don't sweat it, I doubt the players (outside of those with a bonus attached) do.

Have a Grateful Day!

Some fans just vote the party line - all of their hometown players on the ballot.

Performance (or even ability to perform) plays no role in their decision. Only laundry.

Huh...who is listed as our third baseman, then?

I'm not worried about the Molina thing. I'd say that LaRussa is pretty much a lock to take him. He deserves to be there. Ruiz may be the one that gets shafted in all of this.

and, as to why we get these stupid voting results, is people just vote for whoever they recognize or like. Some casual fans don't even know if a guy has played this year. "oh yeah, ryan howard. he's goood! I'll vote for him."

I think since the all star game counts, they should just take the popular vote away from it. It's dumb anyway. As I once heard, "majority rule doesn't work so well in mental institutions." Basically, don't leave these things up to people who don't really know what they are voting for.

First of all why were the Phillies allowed to list Ryan Howard as their 1B for voting this year at all when it was being optimistic to think he would be back right before the All Star if you're lucky.
