Best Record In Baseball! (Sort of)

With the wild cards and multi-divisions, does that mean as much as it used too?

Means about as much as that year the Blues finished with the most points in hockey, and even won a trophy for it - and then got knocked out in the first round. Something Philadelphia and Washington can sympathize with in 2011 and 2012.

It's still nice, though.

Personally, I'd greatly prefer an '04 to an '06.

How about a '42 (aka an '04 that ends like an '06)?

I guess Billy Beane thinks it should be the most important thing.

But yeah, hockey players don't go baptize their kids in the President's Trophy after they win it.

It doesn't mean a whole bunch in the greater scheme of things, which is why I can't agree that '04 is better than '06.

But it sure is fun on a day-to-day basis.

And that Beane article was embarrassing--of course the prince of playoff failures is going to wish that having a great regular-season record was more important.

I don't get why people still seem to prefer '04 to '06. Getting as far as they did only for it to end in complete failure and embarrassment at the world series level made me want to forget that year ever happened.

Other than having the satisfaction of knowing that it was a massively talented team during the regular season, I just don't see the appeal.

2004 was the most fun Ive ever had as a Cardinals fan, in total. I watched so many games, went to Busch more that season than any other, and was with fellow fans almost every postseason game. The WS no show was super depressing, but that was a great summer for me.

2006 world series was so ugly that I didnt feel the exhileration I felt in the NLCS in 04. And the absurd joy of 2011 August comeback n on makes me content to say that 2004 was my favorite season in terms of an entire summer.

Counterpoint: in the greater scheme of things, no baseball game means much, so I'll take the year where we dominated over a much larger sample size and were much more fun to watch.

I always felt like things might've turned out a lot differently in the '04 WS if the Cards could've pulled through in Game 1. [expletive] Mark Bellhorn.
