From Baseball America this week - highlights:
... landmark moment for the club that had planned within this calendar year
to be a large player in the Cuban and Asian markets.

"We made a very conscious effort over the last year to understand the Cuban
market, to understand the Cuban market, to undersand how we could put our
fingerprints on this moving forward," general manager J.M. said. "All along
we targeted middle infielders if that was something that we could do to improve
our organization. We feel pretty confident this is a good fit for this
organization."

Diaz, 23, has the potential for an above-average bat and some scouts believe
he'll stick at SS, though he has a willingness to play second base or third
base. He has an arm good enough for the position and solid hands. His bat
is lively and brings extra-base power potential.

The Cardinals used the time (away from baseball after defecting) to scour
for as much information as they could. They scouted him in person. They
scouted others he played with or against to get a larger database of why he
might have done well against them.

In Cuba, the 6'1", 195 pound short-stop hit .315 with 12 home runs and 11
stolen bases in 270 at-bats during the 2012 pro season in Cuba.

The Cardinals could start him at AA Springfield. He will be a priority SS at
any level...

"We can give him time to develop from a talent standpoint," Mozeliak said.
"Take his time and get back to where he was. I think from our organizational
standpoint that's a great fit for us at this time.".

Is he going to see any game time in ST games before they start to head north? Teams will be down to who heads north soon, so if he doesn't see any Grapefruit action soon he probably won't this year.

They keep saying he will get into games as soon as he has his work visa. Goold, in yesterday's chat, noted that Diaz is in Mexico now working on it and it could be settled in a few days.

Dodgers designated INF Erisbel Arruebarrena for assignment.
The move clears a spot for the newly-signed Brett Anderson on the 40-man roster. It comes as a bit of a surprise, as the Dodgers signed Arruebarrena to a five-year, $25 million contract this past February, but the new front office obviously views him differently than the old one. Known as a strong defender, the 24-year-old hit .195 (8-for-41) in 22 games with the Dodgers this past season and .259/.304/.417 in 68 games between four different levels in the minors. The Dodgers might already have a trade lined up for him, but he can be outrighted to the minors if he passes through waivers unclaimed. He's owed $16 million over the next four years, so there's a real possibility he remains with the organization.

That's a sign of dysfunction - either signing him or signing him and then letting him go so quickly. One of the two.

Different front offices, one signed him, the other DFA'd him.
