2014 Road To Omaha/CWS Thread

Post by MrCrowesGarden »

Just finished up watching the Oregon State game, and this has been the wildest tournament I can remember. Five of the eight national seeds have already been eliminated, including the #1 and #2 teams. For reference, in the five years before this one, a combined four national seeds were eliminated in the regionals. All four national seeds on one side of the bracket were already eliminated, so we're guaranteed to get an unseeded team coming to Omaha.

Stanford beat Indiana on a walk-off home run. They also came back in their previous game to win (Indiana was 39-0 when leading after 7 before regionals).
LSU was absolutely destroyed by Houston.
Texas Tech makes their first Super Regional in history.
Maryland has looked surprisingly good.

This has basically been the equivalent of the wildest opening weekend in the NCAA basketball tournament you could imagine.

Five teams coming to Omaha so far:

Texas
Louisville
UC Irvine (and 71st overall pick Andrew Morales)
Texas Tech (1st trip in school history) (and 33rd rounder RHP Dominic Moreno)
Vanderbilt

Three elimination games today

Pepperdine vs (7) TCU
Maryland vs. (3) Virginia
Ole Miss vs. (5) Louisiana-Lafayette

It's possible none of the national seeds come to Omaha, though unlikely. I'll be rooting for the Ragin' Cajuns if they make it; otherwise, I'll probably back the Anteaters

Watched Morales pitch a 5-hit shutout on Saturday night against Oklahoma State (coached by Matt Holliday's brother, Josh). Kid struggled a bit early and just got more and more impressive as the game went on. Oklahoma State had been averaging 8 runs a game heading in to that series against UC Irvine so getting himself out of an early jam or two and then just dominating the rest of the way was good to see. If I remember correctly he put down 10 in a row to end the game and 15 of the last 16 overall. His curve was looking pretty dang good too and went along with a fastball that was still hitting 91-92 in the 9th inning. OSU wasn't even coming close to touching it as Morales kept getting stronger later in the game.

TCU, Virginia and Ole Miss take the final three spots.

I'm officially an Anteaters fan for the next two weeks.

Crazy game at TDAP. Vanderbilt scored 9 runs in the 3rd inning to take a 9-2 lead, then hung on to win 9-8 over Virginia. Cavaliers gave up a ton of walks. It's the first time any team that's scored five runs at the CWS has lost since TD Ameritrade Park opened in 2011.
