Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said that Carlos Martinez will have a "soft cap" on his innings next season if he wins a spot in the rotation.
As it stands right now, Martinez is the favorite over Marco Gonzales for the No. 5 spot following the trade of Shelby Miller. Mozeliak noted that the club would keep an eye on Martinez's workload during the season so that they will have him available to contribute down the stretch. Working mostly as a reliever, Martinez threw just 99 2/3 frames in 2014. He's never thrown more than 108 innings in a season as a pro.

To help keep Martinez's innings down they like let him start 3 turns in the roration in a row then the 4th turn in the rotation have Gonzalez start instead. But to keep him from going 9-10 days inbetween pitching the game that Gonzalz is starting use Martinez out of the bullpen if necessary.

Counting spring training and the playoffs, Martinez threw 120 innings last year.
He is also pitching in the Domincan Winter League, for example throwing 3.1 innings just yesterday. I think the innings target for him could reach a max of 180 in 2015.
