Still, way too premature to be talking about AW being back.
I agree about the whole "AW is back" thing (he needs to take this and build on it for a few starts), but I will admit to being encouraged by a few things. He finally had K/BB numbers that look right (compared to the hideous K/BB numbers he'd been putting up before last night). And just his comments in the post-game wrap-ups... He's been pretty honest about his poor early season performance, and he was much more upbeat about the quality of his stuff last night.

Let's just say it was a step in the right direction.

How is/was his velocity? Seemed like he had been sitting upper 80s to low 90s with his fastball.

Copying and pasting my thoughts from the other thread:

He was a little better yesterday, but still not good. I saw a few 91 MPH heaters, which is better than 88. The movement on the two seamer was decent. Some curves were good, some were not. He had 5 strikeouts, which was nice.

But he faced 22 batters. 8 reached, 7 got hits, and 2 homered.

So while it wasn't a start we should feel good about, at least he didn't get pummeled.

And maybe getting that first win out of the way will help.

Prior to last night's start, Waino's average velocity was: 89.5 FB, 86.2 CT, 74.5 CB, 83.0 CH

Last night it looked like: 90.1 FB, 86.6 CT, 74.9 CB, 83.3 CH

So his velocity was up slightly relative to his first four starts. He also threw a lot more fastballs than he had been before.

Just to build off of this, his FB velocity according to Pitch F/X is 1 full MPH lower than '14 (and '15 too, but that hardly counts). I'm still not too worried. A 1 mph drop over his career is not something to make a big fuss over, especially considering the sample size and the date.

I would worry more about his K rate and BB rate; last night he made real progress there.
