The Curious Case of Andrew McCutchen
From 2012-2015 (4 seasons) Andrew McCutchen slashed .313/.404/.523 for an OPS of .927.
He won an MVP, finished in the top 5 of the MVP voting all 4 seasons, won a silver slugger award in all 4 seasons, won a gold glove, and was arguably the best player in the National League over that 4 year stretch.
Since that time, (1+ seasons) Andrew McCutchen is slashing .248/.327/.424 for an OPS of .751
Oh how far one can fall in the blink of an eye. He's hitting .206 right now. It's truly mind boggling and as a life long Pirates' fan and a HUGE Andrew McCutchen fan, its extremely painful to watch.

He finished 5th in the MVP race and lead his team to 98 wins in 2015 without dreads.go birds wrote:shouldnt have cut the dreads

30 is awfully young for a free-fall.
I know this doesn't explain all of 2016, or anything at all - but isn't he a notoriously slow starter and streaky hitter?
How's his defense been.

He has always been a slow starter, but never this bad. I wouldn't really call him a streaky hitter. When he was good, he was GOOD.Freed Roger wrote:30 is awfully young for a free-fall.

His defense has been fine. I don't know what the metrics say but he has been fine.

Well if it's not physical; it's mental. No reason a player his age shouldn't still be performing at the same levels he was in those good years. Maybe he lost some confidence somewhere; or maybe he needs to take a sabbatical to Korea like Thames.

I'm definitely not a Pirate's fan but I've also always been a fan of McCutchen. Definitely sad to see and hope he figures out something... but in a way that doesn't hurt the Cardinals. I've always hoped to see him wearing the Birds on the Bat before his career is over and hopefully with something left to offer.
I am a fan of Andrew but the Cards still have to come first. If it takes him never playing a baseball game again for the Cards to have post season success then I'm just fine with that. : )
