Strange dynamic in St. Louis. The front office screws around with the manager's coaching staff a lot. Matheny's acceptance of this is part of the reason he's safe.

Uh... what?
Lilliquist flew under the radar, but I think we're going to have a very hard time finding someone who consistently got as much out of his pitchers as Lilliquist did.

I would say so. But, I just read that his contract was up this year, so that always means a change is possible.heyzeus wrote:Unexpected, no?
I think that Lilliquist just flies so far under the radar that there was no expectation of anything with him at all. I'm actually betting that more than a few casual Cards fans could not even name the pitching coach. Compare him to Dave Duncan.
I'm having trouble coming up with a starter who consistently under-performed with Lilliquist at the helm. The list of guys who over-performed or performed as expected is very long.
Dunc got credit for a handful of surprise successes and a lot of steady performances. Lilliquist has done the same, imo, but his overall approach and philosophy was better than Duncan's, imo. He brought back the strikeout and still managed to develop young starters into guys who could eat innings -- Lynn, Wacha, Martinez to name a few.
Cost might factor into this. Contract up. Long service record. All of that equals more $$$$$$$.
