I have no clue. Why would they not keep Verlander fresh for game 5?
Because they could have Keuchel go instead.

Granted, hindsight is 20/20, but pitchers are weird creatures. And starting pitchers really don't like going in relief because they can't go through their pregame warmup and prep rituals. Both Sale and Verlander put up mediocre results in relief today.

Kimbrel gives up a run in top of 9; Ken Giles says "hold my beer."

i mean yea...but verlander has never pitched in relief before, if im not mistaken.

Elimination game? Sure. But to burn your ace in a game 4 on the road....i dunno. This seems like its going to be a trend and its weird.

but to your point on keuchal, you could probabl argue verlander is the better choice of the two to start. He's been lights out since he arrived in houston.

Sale was dominant for 4 innings. Have to think he gave the Sox the best chance to win.

Sale makes more sense to me than Verlander. Sox were going to be eliminated so it was all hands on deck. But the Astros didn't want to go to a game 5; so I guess that was their rationale for putting in Verlander.

He wasn't awful, but he gave up 2 ER in 4.2 IP and took the loss.

Just remember that David Price went 4 innings in one relief appearance this series but couldn't be a starter.
