Don't be bitter about modern stats dude. It's unbecoming.

Most potential trade partners don't know if they'll be in the playoff hunt in late summer, so Baltimore would limit their return by narrowing the field of trade partners this early in the year. Closer to the deadline there could be a half-dozen teams jockeying for a playoff spot who really covet Machado, whereas now there might be only a few teams willing to mortgage the future on a 6-month rental.
OTOH, if a team gets him for an extra couple of months and is able to get an extra 2-3 wins out of it, they might be willing to give up a little bit more.

Right but I don't think teams have enough clarity now on where they will be in August. What if you trade two good prospects who you think are worth a combined 40 wins from 2019-2024, get Machado for the rest of the year, miss the playoffs by a couple games, then watch Machado take someone else's money to leave you?

Or, what if you trade those same prospects for Machado now, win the wild card by 5 games, then get knocked out in one game? You didn't need the extra 2-3 wins to clear the wild card and you got bounced and Machado is leaving and you're out 40 wins over the next 6 years.

It becomes more worth doing, esp for a guy on an expiring deal, when you have more clarity on what you need to add to get over the hump.

The flip side is that the deeper into the season we go, the more teams will be eliminated from contention. Fewer teams in contention means fewer potential trade partners. Also, the longer they wait to trade him, the better chance of him getting injured........ and then they get nothing for him.

Still, I don't think they'll trade him this early.

They said Russell would be in a trade. So the O's would move a partial year of a stud for a defensive specialist with a pretty shaky bat plus.....what? Got to be something else in there unless the market for a Machado rental is light. I'm not up on what's in the Cubs farm system and I can't think of any A-list prospects they have after the promotions and trades of the last few years.
