Might as well sell the farm after trading Cole.

Odd move for the Giants. Cutch on the Giants this season probably doesn't make them a playoff contender, and he'll be a free agent next winter.

The Giants know their window is going to slam shut in about 2 years at the most, and they have no farm system to use to attract high end trade targets, so they're going to live above the luxury tax as a means to acquire talent(Longoria, now Cutch) until the reckoning comes. They're the next-gen Tigers.

This is what happens when teams try to extend their window of competitiveness and push off a rebuild. The opposite of the Cubs and Astros models, but they have been competitive more recently then when those teams decided to tank. The other "benefit" the Giants had is that they had absolute massive holes of production on their team so even high paid inefficient investments make their team better. When you don't have arbitration guys that can put up 1.5-2.5 WAR you gotta take on guys making $10+ Million to fill the starting lineup.

They also have an entirely owner funded stadium and probably can’t withstand another season like the last one. Or a long rebuild.

Giants probably want to try and extend him as well. They've got the resources if they don't mind the luxury tax.

Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that Kyle Crick is part of the package the Giants are sending to the Pirates in the Andrew McCutchen trade.
He's surely not the central piece, but Crick is a solid flier for the Pirates. The former compensation round pick has major command issues and made a move to the bullpen full-time last season, but he's just 25 and can reach the upper-90s with his fastball. We should find out the rest of the Pirates' return soon.

The Pirates had 3 guys who OPS'd higher than Randal Grichuk last season. McCutchen was on of them.
