Why do we struggle to quantify the effect a manager has on a game? Maybe not so easy as quantifying player impact, but a "manager index" does not seem such a farfetched idea, right? Please, help us... we need people to understand how bad Matheny is.

I think people understand his... limitations pretty well, don't they?

I don't think anyone is arguing his in-game decision making is flawless or even that good. I think when we talk about it being hard to quantify the effect of the manager, it is more a matter of so much of what the manager does happening away from our view.

Signs of Mike Maddux were everywhere during spring training. He had the pitchers throwing on the back fields. Players and Matheny were singing his praises. Since the season started, signs of Mike Maddux are ... hard to find. And that's being generous. The hope here was that Maddux would iron out some wrinkles in Matheny's bullpen management. So far we have seen some concerning signs post-Maddux. The biggest ones, in my opinion, are the continued presence of a reliever who, for the most part, does not pitch (Mike Mayers) and the over-reliance on certain arms (Matt Bowman). If you are going to have an eight-man bullpen and preach match-ups and flexibility, then you are going to open yourself up for criticism when you don't use it. I'm OK with going to Holland last night. Leaving him in there when he so clearly lacked control made little to zero sense to me. Maddux should have had a hand in that conversation, right? Color me confused.

Goold said in his chat that Maddux said he would still be learning pitchers early in the season, and that Matheny had a better feel for returning pitchers, and he needed to consider that.
