With him getting no strikeouts does but having such a low ERA, does that change how WAR is calculated a little bit?
His xFIP and ERA are extremely far apart. Never seen a pitcher like that.
He needs to up the strikeouts regardless. It's ridiculous to throw 102 and not K.

Not going to dispute that he needs to get more K's. He needs to miss more bats.
Looking at him at the 1/4 mark, it's easy to forget that he is a 21 year old who should probably still be in A+ with a promotion to AA coming soon. You can see his lack of maturity in some of his results and his potential in others. At 19 MLB innings, it's a nearly worthless sample size overall. But, from the little we do have, Hicks does a huge groundball rate for a reliever. He doesn't allow LD's and the FB's he does allow don't leave the ballpark. Heck, a noteworthy percentage of those FB's don't even leave the infield. He hasn't allowed a HR. That somewhat -- not all -- accounts for his high strand rate and his crazy low BABIP. But, he's not missing bats and not getting a lot of chasing out of the zone.
I think we've answered some questions about him -- like, what kind of pitcher will he be?. But, the main questions about how successful he'll be are still there -- why can't he get more K's and will he develop control? So far, he hasn't gotten K's and he hasn't shown acceptable control. If he can learn those things -- and he needs to be given time to do so -- then he'll be a whale of a reliever. If not, this is going to bite him.

Last night was why FIP is an important stat.
We all saw this blow up coming if you follow FIP and xFIP over ERA.
Throws a 100 but can't K? Trade him.

Yeah because no other relief pitcher in baseball has ever given up a lead.Big Amoco Sign wrote:Last night was why FIP is an important stat.

He needs to work on some things; would probably benefit from more time in the minors but who do you replace him with right now? It's ridiculous how quick we are to want to dismiss someone and ship them off; then in two years complain about how it would be nice if we had held on to that kid that's got fifty saves for the Indians or Blue Jays or whoever.

I'm interested in what he can fetch in a trade just on his own. His value may never be higher.CardsofSTL wrote:Yeah because no other relief pitcher in baseball has ever given up a lead.Big Amoco Sign wrote:Last night was why FIP is an important stat.

San Francisco is ready to blow up their team. Would love to see if Hicks could get us a year and a half of Bumgarner.

Or you could just have him throw a 4 seamer and watch the K’s pile up while he’s making league minimum and hasn’t had TJS yet.
