Rafael Palmeiro knows there are people who think he is too old and has lost his mind in wanting to make a major league comeback at the age of 53.

Nearly 13 years after his MLB career ended under a cloud because of testing positive for a banned steroid, Palmeiro has joined the independent Cleburne Railroaders as a teammate with his 28-year-old son.

Palmeiro is going the independent route after not getting a non-roster invite from an MLB team during spring training. He said Thursday his goal is to get back to the big leagues, and that is the only reason is he playing again. The slugger had 3,000 hits and 500 home runs but was shunned by Hall of Fame voters and dropped off the ballot.

MLB proposed essentially a primary system and a general election for the fan voting. There would be an initial wave of voting in the standard way with a player from each team represented at the position. Then, around mid-June, there would be a cutoff and the top three vote-getters at each position would be in a runoff (starting from zero votes again) with the winner starting at that position.

The hope was that players would take to social media to push candidacies and that would excite fans to further participate and then watch the July 17 game in Washington.

MLB made its initial proposal in early April with no additional compensation for the players before ultimately offering $1.1 million of inducements that would be spread among those who finished in the top three of voting, the participants in the Home Run Derby and the winning All-Star team.

The union said it would only consider accepting if MLB agreed to not only the $1.1 million, but also an equal share of revenue derived from this new process.

MLB was not selling a separate sponsorship to the voting and, therefore, felt there was no way to monetize this new process and that it might be worth nothing.

The union refused to budge off the desire for both elements and by late April the proposal was dead.

Greg Garcia's grandfather. The article isn't clear on when he passed exactly; I remember the FSMW guys speaking about him during the last road trip there.
Dave Garcia, a former Padres coach who spent 65 years in professional baseball and managed the California Angels and Cleveland Indians, died recently in San Diego after a lengthy stay in managed care, said former Padres staffer Tom Romanesko. He was 97.

The Mets are working toward a deal for veteran slugger Jose Bautista, multiple sources said Tuesday afternoon, with an eye toward adding a power bat to their roster.

One source described the Mets' interest in Bautista as serious, while another indicated that a deal could be finalized as soon as Tuesday.

The Philadelphia Phillies have lost six of their past eight games. And after a sweep at the hands of the San Francisco Giants, pitcher Jake Arrieta has reached a boiling point.
"We've had bad defensive shifts. We had a checked swing. [Shortstop Scott] Kingery should've gone to second on that play. And they got three hits in a row. The home run -- credit [Andrew] McCutchen for putting a good swing on it, but did not expect a ball like that to get out," Arrieta said in recounting how a five-run sixth inning for the Giants came together against him.

Arrieta got more specific on the topic of what he sees as defensive deficiencies.

"We're the worst in the league with shifts, so we need to change that," Arrieta said.

Here's this bullshildt from Bleacher Report
With a little over a month to go in the 2018 MLB regular season, a number of teams are already looking ahead to the future after falling out of contention.

That's exactly what we'll do here.

Baseball is nearly impossible to predict on a year-in, year-out basis, but what follows is an attempt at projecting how the league will look three years from now.

I say bullshildt because predicting the future is of course ridiculous. But it's interesting reading.

Bleacher Report dude... They're weak. But it's kind of like reading alternative histories... Fun to what if.

Speaking of alternative histories, is the man in the high castle ever going to release season 3. /rant

That article wasn't the worst, but I'd set the o/u on teams correct in the top 10 at 50%.

JMO. If you want to look that far into the future, rank the front offices and then duplicate that list unless a system is stock full of talent under contract and a billion elite prospects (which none are).
