Torre was an MVP

Matheny’s never impressed as a player or manager

Defensively Matheny was an excellent catcher.

I should say... Not a hall of famer. But an excellent defensive catcher.

Just wait a decade and let nostalgia set in.

That's a really interesting question actually. He was pretty revered as a catcher. I realize he was never best in the league and his offense was so so, but he was certainly a fan favorite during his tenure and highly regarded defensively. I think he's going to have to wait for the stink to wear off but I could definitely see down the road the fans voting him in.

Dude had a OPS+ of 67 for the Cardinals. That's not so so, that's Kozma territory.

He put up less than 3WAR in his entire playing career. There are players who do that in a couple of months.

It will take a few years to get the bad taste out of everybody's mouth before anyone would even consider voting for Matheny. Even then, there will be a lot of other people that should go in before he does. If it does gets down to him so many players will be in it will be watered down.
