Re: Manager/Coaching Staff News
Reds
AngelsThree Reds managerial candidates have cleared the first hurdle and have reached the second round of interviews with the club, MLB.com learned on Wednesday via sources.
Joe Girardi, Brad Ausmus and David Bell have all moved through for stronger consideration. It remains unclear if anyone else among the 12 original candidates would get a second interview.
One potential complication for Cincinnati is that all three candidates are being pursued by other clubs to be their manager.
Girardi, the former Yankees (2008-17) and Marlins (2006) skipper, reportedly also interviewed with the Rangers to be a candidate to replace Jeff Banister.
Bell, currently the Giants' vice president of player development and a former manager in the Reds' Minor League system from 2009-12, has already interviewed with the Rangers and is reportedly a finalist for the Blue Jays job to replace John Gibbons.
Ausmus, who managed the Tigers from 2014-17 and works now as a special assistant to the general manager with the Angels, has interviewed with that club to replace Mike Scioscia as manager.
TwinsAt least 10 candidates will be interviewed for the Angels managerial opening, with the initial interviews still ongoing.
General Manager Billy Eppler said Thursday night the Angels have completed eight interviews, with at least two left to go. They might still add more.
Presumably, there will be at least one more round of interviews, although Eppler would not elaborate on the details of the process, including confirming any specific candidates.
So far the only known candidate is Joe Espada, the Houston Astros’ bench coach. It is not clear if Espada is one of those who has already interviewed or one of the two remaining. Although the Astros are still playing, teams in the playoffs sometimes allow their staff members to do interviews around their postseason responsibilities. The Astros are set to open the American League Championship Series on Saturday in Boston.
Beyond Espada, the internal candidates expected to be interviewed included Brad Ausmus and Eric Chavez, both special assistants to Eppler; third base coach Dino Ebel and bench coach Josh Paul.
RangersInternal candidates include bench coach Derek Shelton, Major League coach Jeff Pickler and Triple-A manager Joel Skinner. External candidates who have been linked to the Twins include Indians bench coach Brad Mills, Indians Minor League defensive coach John McDonald, Indians first-base coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Rangers coach Jayce Tingler, Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde and Astros bench coach Joe Espada.
The Twins, though, will also be competing with other clubs for manager candidates, as the Angels, Orioles, Blue Jays, Rangers and Reds are also looking to make a new hire.
Blue JaysThe Rangers added two more candidates to their managerial search by interviewing interim manager Don Wakamatsu and Phillies third-base coach Dusty Wathan.
The Rangers have now interviewed eight candidates in their search for a replacement for Jeff Banister. The Rangers have not yet indicated what the next step will be -- they could continue to interview additional candidates, they could bring back finalists for a second round or they could make a final decision.
The other candidates to interview so far are: Rangers farm director Jayce Tingler, Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde, Astros bench coach Joe Espada, former Yankees manager Joe Girardi, Giants vice president of player development David Bell and Rays field coordinator Rocco Baldelli.
I couldn't find anything credible regarding where Baltimore is at their current stage in the manager search.Toronto has been tight-lipped about candidates to replace John Gibbons, but on Tuesday afternoon, the names started to flood out in a series of reports. Joe Espada, David Bell, Brandon Hyde, Rocco Baldelli and Sam Fuld were all mentioned as possible candidates.
MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported Tuesday morning that Espada interviewed for the Blue Jays' vacancy and the Astros' bench coach has since publicly confirmed the news as well. According to Feinsand's sources, Espada also interviewed for managerial openings with the Rangers, Twins and Angels, as he remains a hot commodity around the league.
MLB Network's Ken Rosenthal reported that Fuld made a strong impression during a recent phone interview with the Blue Jays, but another report later suggested the Phillies' Major League player information coordinator had withdrawn himself from consideration.

Joe Girardi has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Cincinnati Reds' managerial vacancy, according to multiple reports.
Girardi, 54, reportedly was one of three candidates to be considered for second interviews, along with Brad Ausmus and David Bell.
The Athletic, which first reported Girardi's withdrawal, reported Friday that he plans to remain with MLB Network for now but still wants to manage.
Girardi also reportedly has interviewed for the Texas Rangers' managerial vacancy.

Wonder why Girardi even interviewed for all these jobs. Maybe to find out how big of a pay cut he'd have to take.
