Sorry you’re wrong.

Reyes throws harder than 95 and he had better movement with it. Reyes has two plus plus pitches.

Ankiel had two plus plus pitches too. And showed them over 30 starts as a 20 year old. Reyes pitched 46 innings.

We're picking nits here. We won't agree so we can move on from it. My larger point is Reyes needs to be given every chance to be a starter rather than a bullpen arm for the long term.

I don’t recall anyone saying he’d be a bullpen arm for the long term?

He hasn’t pitched for 2 years...he can’t pitch that many innings or he’ll hurt himself again.

He’ll be a starter eventually...but he has to build innings up after not pitching for 2 years

Two seasons in a row with season ending injuries. A few good years of his development stunted. Not sure it's a fluke, and I think it's best to consider him in the bullpen (for now and maybe in the future) to try and watch his innings.

Also, a Reyes/Hicks combo in the back end of the bullpen could be very good. Add in a lefty like Britton or Miller, and that could be an impressive bullpen.

My main point is Reyes is too valuable an asset and talent to relegate to 50-70 innings a year IF you can get 160-200 out of him.

Hopefully not this year...

Sorry you’re wrong.

Velocity matters.

Reyes backs it down to 95, Ankiel topped at 95.

And yes, humans have evolved that quickly in the baseball world. That's why Ankiel was admittedly juicing to try to keep up.

In today's world Ankiel would never have even made MLB. His tendency to not know where the ball was going (which was prevalent in MiLB) would have only been exacerbated by today's coverage. He'd have straight flamed out as a prospect.

Pretty much. I know how nostalgia works but the reality is, Reyes is just a better prospect from a pure talent perspective. No slight to Ankiel at all. Reyes is just a different animal.

Different eras. Ankiel was the top prospect in baseball, and posted a 134 ERA+ as a rookie in the height of the steroid era.

Both he and Reyes were outstanding prospects. We’re splitting hairs to say who is better.

Goold in his chat today ranked the most likely LHP acquisitions by the Cardinals:

1. Britton
2. Will Smith
3. a whole slew of them including Miller, Watson, Dodgers lefties, mystery team.

Also said that if the team doesn't get that upper tier LHP reliever they'll get the specialist and then look to add a RHP you'd expect to see in the 8th or 9th.

would i be ok with britton? absolutely

but it seems odd, that he's always mentioned as our #1 target, when there are better options out there right now

I would rather us trade an asset we have no room for than sign another big reliever contract. I am not opposed to signing a reliever either, just prefer to prioritize the former.

Britton is literally a left-handed Holland. Hard, hard pass.

The order should be more like Smith > other LHP trade options > do nothing > sign Britton.
