I've been in rooms where sports awards are decided. It's weird. One or two strong advocates can lead to some bizarre decisions and once certain candidates get momentum, there's no stopping them. Baines had a very favorable committee. Luck of the draw.

Larussa and Reinsdorf certainly. Anyhow I’m not a small hall guy but Baines’ induction certainly opens the door to suggesting a bunch of other guys belong.

And it should be noted that a lot of Baines’ selection may have to do with who was on this committee; as Jay Jaffe noted, three out of the 16 voters (Jerry Reinsdorf, Pat Gillick and Tony LaRussa) had strong connections to him.

BBWAA, who put in Hoffman and gave 37 percent to Vizquel, should probably pipe down about this one.

Baines is a HOFer? I never would have guessed that.

Pete Kozma wants to get to that 10 year anniversary now!

Does this mean automtic retirement of Smith's number and his face on the outfield wall?
