That Cabrera contract is a freakin' disaster.

Giving a 33 year old 8/248 is a little different than giving a 31 year old something like 5/130.

Why wouldn't Goldschmidt demand what his contemporaries like Votto and Cabrera got (at least what they make AAV wise)? He will even make arguments around Hosmer's contract. He won't get it, but he's going to try.

He will command and get 26+ AAV.

Yeah, I could see 5/130. That wouldn't surprise me.

I think teams are wising up though. Those long-term, high AAV contacts just don't work, especially for players on the wrong side of 30.

I don't necessarily disagree with you about the risk of giving Goldy an extension. It kinda just depends on what it would look like, and I'm not sure if we know the answer to that.

Even 5/150 wouldn't actually stop the Cardinals from doing anything though-- that's just themselves.

I definitely think that 5/150 would stop them.

Goldschmidt is not going to get 5/$150MM. The market will not pay that for a 32 year old 1B.

A really good 32 year old is lucky to get 2 years in this climate. Brantley got 2. McCutcheon got 3. Both were younger than Goldshmidt will be, I think. Donaldson should be better than both, is a corner infielder, and he signed his 1 year deal early, anticipating this terrible market for older players.

So, maybe Goldy gets 3 with a higher AAV because it’s an extension. Or 4 with a little less per year. But 5 is probably not on the table for anyone over 30 anymore.

The market has not seen a 1B of Goldschmidt's caliber (someone as automatic as it gets for 5+ WAR) since....Desmond...no....Cabrera? So how do you know? See what Hosmer and Desmond got? The market is still signing guys like Cain and Fowler to 5/85...Goldschmidt is twice their skill, right?

Donaldson turned an injury walk year into 23 million for a year.

Then you have guys like Zimmerman and Chris Davis.

Goldy will get paid. Over 26 AAV too. I just don't know the years.

Is anyone arguing that he’ll get less than $25MM AAV? 25 is probably the floor, I think 26-28 is the range for 4-6 years. Outside of that I would consider a shock.

I was thinking something like 4/120 for Goldy. If he wants five years; I'd be ok with that too.
