Are teams gun shy about a 10+ year contract? If so, will somebody cave or will Boras come down to the market?

I've been wondering the same thing.Radbird wrote:Are teams gun shy about a 10+ year contract? If so, will somebody cave or will Boras come down to the market?
It's going to be fascinating to see how it ends. As others have pointed out, a player of his caliber (and p.r. potential) hitting free agency at his age is almost unprecedented. Mega-deals never end well. Owners have to know that, but this is a little different.

I feel like the length being long isn't the issue. It all comes down to high AAV and early years and opt outs now. Slowly moving the direction the NBA has.
We knew Peralta and Fowler would suck in later years. You're paying for that player to help you win in the meantime and taking the penalty of low output/DFA'd early years as part of the overall costs. Sometimes the goal isn't always getting a Holliday value contract.

Of course. Doesn’t seem like anyone is jumping to give a 4 WAR player 10 years. The longer this goes on, I think the worse it is for Harper. Though history shows I’m mostly wrong.Radbird wrote:Are teams gun shy about a 10+ year contract?
No team wants to pay someone 30m for maybe 2-3 seasons for them to provide nothing. There’s more cost effective ways to get production without that sort of sunk cost. $100m in sunk cost doesn’t get you ahead.

Tulowitzki was the same age as Harper when he signed his 10-year contract. It was for half of what Harper will likely command. It was still a disaster.Socnorb11 wrote:I've been wondering the same thing.Radbird wrote:Are teams gun shy about a 10+ year contract? If so, will somebody cave or will Boras come down to the market?
