If we don't sign Harper, does that mean our season is over?
At least in terms of making the playoffs

Never. Gets. Old.

Was that 2004 or 2006? Must have been '04 because it was back on CardsTalk.

FIFTEEN YEARS?!?

I sure as hell know a lot of folks who are like that who are poor as hell. People suck.

Hopefully we can happen upon a generational talent that we can extend terribly below market value to build our team around while we're in a division full of teams that don't want to spend money, and the only team that could outspend us happens to be going through an ownership change and ground up rebuild!!!

I know we're all pretty worried about ownership money. And, well, if you sign a guy to the highest contract in MLB history you're stuck with it. Not like Stanton and ARod got traded.

Through age 25 Average OPS+

139
142
145

Which is which?

Best OPS+ year through age 25
198
163
164

Which is which?

It doesn't matter which is which because they're all obviously offensive forces. If they were all a FA at the same time you could make an argument as to who should be signed, but it would matter because they're all [expletive] powerhouses. The thing is, only one of them is available right now. You don't have to trade top prospects AND assume the contract. You can just sign him.

The Cardinals are in a perfect spot to get Harper.

Yep. And up until this past season was pretty much an average defender or slightly better... when he had every reason not to go running into a wall or go all out on a dive or risk any kind of season ending injury.
