Does the age of this team concern you?
Looking at the everyday starting 8 it has to be one of the oldest in recent memory. That’s not conducive for staying healthy throughout a season
C - Molina - 36
1B - Goldschmidt - 31
2B - Wong - 28
SS - DeJong - 25
3B - Carpenter - 33
LF - Ozuna - 28
CF - Bader - 24
RF - Fowler - 33
That’s 4 guys over 30.
In the bullpen Miller is 34, Cecil is 32, Gregerson is 34 and of course Wainwright is 37

Youngest pitching staff in baseball
Cecil/Gregerson likely out the door
Pretending like Tyler O’Neill isn’t going to stick in the OF somewhere
It’s old but we’re on par with other teams in the Central
Lots of them gone after this season anyways.

Not really concerned. There are good insurance plans (Gyorko, O’Neill, Martinez if he’s still here) for injuries, other than Yadi. And I don’t think we want to find an expensive backup C to play 30 games if Yadi stays healthy.

And we're about a half a season away from Knizner being right there ready to take over if Yadi suffers a major injury. He might not be ready to excel yet, but he would be a perfectly acceptable start when you lose your HOF catcher.Popeye_Card wrote:Not really concerned. I'm also not concerned with our age. We have very good depth. IMO, this is the right way to build a team that's stuck between two generations.
The original post includes major roles from 4 guys that we're really not counting on very much. The team can say what it wants because a good Fowler is a good player, but I still expect O'Neill to end up with a lot of time in the OF and, if Goldschmidt wasn't here, I could see him being the most productive player per PA on the team. Gregerson and AW are extra pieces in case young players fail, and Cecil could be cut.
So, yes, we're relying on Miller, Carpenter and Goldschmidt (in reverse order of importance), but those are three 30+ players that I don't have a problem relying on to be productive. Even if Miller can't be a closer/fireman anymore, he can still almost certainly be a very productive lefty specialist. He has a ways to fall before his value is negated. Gyorko is sitting behind Carpenter... you can't find a better backup. And if Goldschmidt gets hurt, well, you have Carpenter and Gyorko, but we would be in trouble. Just like any team who loses their MVP candidate.

No
We want to compete without mortgaging the farm. That's what we are doing.

I prefer young men in their 20’s; all in shape; oiled up and...wait sorry. Was supposed to be my PM order to CardsofSTL
