The Cardinals and their three arbitration-eligible players — left fielder Marcell Ozuna, starting pitcher Michael Wacha and reliever Dominic Leone — reached agreement Friday on contracts for the 2019 season, with Ozuna topping the list at $12.25 million, up from his $9 million salary of 2018.

Earlier, Wacha settled on a $6.3 million contract for 2019. The agreement also calls for Wacha to receive another $100,000 if he pitches at least 175 innings.

Leone, who missed more than half of the 2018 season with an upper arm irritation, will make $1.26 million this year. He was at $1.085 million in 2018.

Those three figures are all a little lower than Cots estimations, so the Cards have about $1-2M more than they did yesterday for budgeting purposes.

What’s the payroll currently at, relative to last season? Seems to be right around the same or possibly a little lower at the moment?

Nolan Arenado requested $30 million and was offered $24 million by the Rockies when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.
As Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic notes, even at the Rockies' figure of $24 million, Arenado will set the record for the highest salary ever in arbitration. MLBTradeRumors.com projected that Arenado would earn $26.1 million through arbitration, which is closer to the club's figure than to Arenado's. The 27-year-old superstar made $17.750 million in 2018 where he slashed a monstrous .297/.374/.561 with a league-leading 38 homers and 110 RBI.

We were a little over last year but with these arbs coming in a little lower than expected, they are probably a hair lower than last year. That’s just opening day payroll. AW’s incentive deal could add more to final payroll.

We have space to add another player. They are definitely looking at left handed bench peices and Goold was pretty clear that they are looking at starters, too, since prices are coming down.

We could end up going’s into ST with this roster, but I still kind of doubt it.

I hope so. The Cardinals, as currently constructed, are improved ... but not sure they have really put themselves at the top of the division. Certainly in the thick of things but another move or two could really solidify their place as a playoff team. Team hasn’t even came close to flexing that payroll muscle yet.
