2019's First Matt Carpenter Thread
I have been thinking about this for a few days; it is no secret that the Cardinals are trying to extend Goldschmidt; so for the sake of argument; let's say they are successful and sign him for five years. Carpenter is going to play third base this season and the team will almost definitely pick up his option for 2020. That makes him a 35 year old free agent after the 2020 season when you still have Goldie for three or four more seasons manning first base. If Carpenter is healthy and has been productive; I am not talking peak Carpenter but let's say he is still the serviceable Carpenter that we expect for 2019; what do you do with him? Sign him to another short term deal? If so; what's his position?

Sign Machado and Harper. Ship Carp, Dex and DeJong to Denver for Arenado. Easy peasy.

Sounds reasonable. Throw in Reyes and Flaherty if they must.
But if Rockies ask for Bader, walk away. He’s the face of the franchise for the next 6 years, unless he gets a lifetime extension in spring training, that is.

The bigger worry for Carp would be defense at 3B as he ages. 2B wouldn't be any easier. Unless it's at a reduced rate as a Matt Adams style PH, it probably doesn't work if we have Goldy too.

Hazard of not making majors until 25; 27ish a full time starter. He hits Old Wily Vet you stash in LF/1b status 7 years in.
