Re: 2019 Official™ StL™ Spring™ Training™ Thread™
I don't ever recall him mention religion directly when asked about baseball (unless the question was framed in a religious context) but it probably comes from getting to the stadium early before games when I go straight there from work and constantly hearing the advertisement for his book and that pregame sales pitch did mention faith a lot. When the team was struggling, that sales pitch about being a leader of men REALLY got on my nerves. Especially at the end, the last thing I wanted to hear was about how a book could help me learn Matheny's leadership views, LOL.cardsfantx wrote:I know matheny was/is very religious, but I have never heard him speak about God, and that God/faith would help them/intervene...where is this coming from?tlombard wrote:***My mention of "faith in God getting them there" is a shot at Matheny and not at anybody else's beliefs/faith/lack of either in the sense that as opposed having an actual plan and working through it, Matheny seemed at times to just keep doing the same thing and had faith that God would suddenly intervene and the ship would right itself. That's not how things work whether you follow any religion or not.
I thought I read/listened to most of cardinal articles/shows, but have never heard matheny mention anything like that at all...
To be fair, I have seen a few quotes/excerpts from the book and I agree with every one that I've read and they also don't mention religion. I guess it is just between the constant pregame shilling of his book, the advertising for Christian Family Day that centered around him heavily leading up to the date and personally hearing people talk about how he was such a good Christian, I just associate him with relying on faith too much especially in light of the same problems showing up year after year with little or not improvement and even regression at times. Maybe it isn't fair (and it probably isn't), but that's where my views on Matheny are at this point and where that comment came from.

Brett has as of today has replaced Juan Agosto as number one on my list of St. Louis Cardinals suckbag left handed relief pitchers. I shouldn't have waited this long obviously.

You should have declared this at least 3 days ago.Leroy wrote:Brett has as of today has replaced Juan Agosto as number one on my list of St. Louis Cardinals suckbag left handed relief pitchers. I shouldn't have waited this long obviously.

There was still hope of digging a body out of the graveyard, installing Cecil's brain, and jolting the corpse to life as a possible bullpen option. Just not to be.Fat_Bulldog wrote:You should have declared this at least 3 days ago.Leroy wrote:Brett has as of today has replaced Juan Agosto as number one on my list of St. Louis Cardinals suckbag left handed relief pitchers. Has that feel, yes. Rick Hummel will have more on this shortly. He had a chance to talk to Brett Cecil today -- part of the many angles of news that group here has been covering today -- and will have details about Cecil's lack of feeling in his fingers and concerns about his forearm.

Doesn't it look like the Bret Cecil era with STL is over? Are they just delaying the inevitable?

Randy Arozarena has a fractured hand -- after HBP on Saturday -- and he'll miss many weeks. He's headed to see a hand specialist. Rangel Ravelo had no structural damage in his ribcage or near his ribcage, and he'll miss a couple of days.

Jack Flaherty will start the second game of the year for the Cardinals against the Brewers on March 29.
This had been rumored for a while, but it's now confirmed. It also means that he'll start the home opener vs. the Padres on April 4. The right-hander was very good for the Cardinals last year with a 3.34 ERA and 182 strikeouts over 151 innings, and it is certainly reasonable to expect him to be even better in 2019.
