PECOTA hated their pitching, and so far PECOTA has been vindicated.

There aren't really any reinforcement either.

Maples walks everything.

Mekkes may be able to help them but that's 1 guy

The combo of Rizzo/Bryant used to be pretty terrifying. Rizzo has declined:

2016 wRC+ = 145, ISO = .252
2017 wRC+ = 134, ISO = .234
2018 wRC+ = 125, ISO = .187

He's still only 29 and so maybe some of this is just random variation and not all due to some kind of decline. I think they are going to need Baez to be a monster again, and he could be. We'll see.

Rizzo had back and foot injuries in 2018. I think he'll be back. 125 wRC+ is also not terrible lol. He's also crushing it so far this year.

Cubs' problem is pitching. Their offense smokes ours.

Back and foot issues are never last years problem

PECOTA is usually pretty close, in my opinion.

I don't think the Cubs are that dangerous but I also don't think it's a good idea to take anything seriously 7 games into the season. I wouldn't look at records or any of that until the middle/end of may. Don't get me wrong, you should be aware of warning signs but don't take any of this early season stuff to seriously. All these things have a way of correcting themselves over 162 games.

Exactly. Their entire pitching staff won't have double digit ERAs for much longer.

But that staff, especially the bullpen, is a serious, serious problem that was brewing last year. Their offense will eventually figure itself out as they always do.

Their team wRC+ of 132 is 4th in the majors - the offense is not at all their problem right now.

That team WHIP over 2 on the other hand...

I don't know...I think their current offensive production is coming from feasting on garbage time relievers because the other teams have been WAY up on them and just need to preserve the good relievers' innings.

I could be wrong but they seem to be striking out at a WAY higher rate than they usually do. (not that a Cardinals fan has any room to brag about that statistic right now).

I'd act shocked, but they're the best team in the division.
