As the runs piled up, Jacob deGrom figured he would find a way out of each jam. When Mitch Garver homered in the second inning Tuesday, deGrom thought he could limit the damage to maybe just that. One of baseball’s best at powering through struggles, deGrom believed he could strand Jorge Polanco after a leadoff triple in the third. He supposed he could stanch the rally after Eddie Rosario homered.

Even after Garver went deep again, snapping deGrom’s record-tying run of 26 consecutive quality starts, deGrom figured he would recover. When Max Kepler drove home the sixth run off him with a single in the fourth inning, deGrom was still planning his escape.

That the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner never quite found his way in a 14-8 loss to the Twins was jarring for the Mets, who had not seen him allow more than three runs in a game since last April 10.

Not since last May 13, when he left a start early due to injury, had deGrom given the Mets anything less than a quality start. In the end, deGrom matched Bob Gibson for the longest such streak in Major League history, but fell short of surpassing him.

4 reasons why the Mariners are 11-2
Let this sink in for a minute. Two Major League teams have scored six or more runs in 11 of their first 13 games in a season since 1908. That would be the 1932 Yankees and -- after Tuesday’s 6-3 win over the Royals -- the 2019 Mariners.

Things are getting historic in a hurry for a surprising Seattle club, which is off to an 11-2 start with a team expected to take as step back this season with 15 newcomers on its current 25-man roster and having traded away the veteran nucleus of last year’s 89-win club.

Here are four reasons the Mariners are rolling early even without Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz, Jean Segura, Edwin Diaz, James Paxton, et al.

1. The power is definitely on

Seattle’s 33 homers ties the record for most in the first 13 games of a season, equaling the 2000 Cardinals.

2. On the Marco again

Not all the Mariners’ success has been about mashing homers. Marco Gonzales became the second Seattle pitcher to win his first four starts to open a season while lowering his ERA to 3.16 with six strong innings.

3. Speed-Dee doesn’t hurt either

Add No. 9 hitter Dee Gordon as another non-thumper reason for Seattle’s early success. The 30-year-old second baseman dealt with a broken toe that slowed his second half last year, but he’s off and running again in '19, and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and swiped his MLB-leading sixth stolen base.

4. It takes a village, or at least nine guys

The Mariners racked up 15 hits and have had 12 or more in their past four games. Daniel Vogelbach went 3-for-5 with two doubles and is hitting .611 (11-for-18) with nine extra-base hits and nine RBIs in his last five games, and the entire lineup kept producing.

Each team's longest hitting streak

Joe DiMaggio made baseball history and added to his legend when he put together a record 56-game hitting streak for the Yankees in 1941. It remains one of the most famous numbers in sports, and nobody has seriously challenged the Yankee Clipper’s mark since then.

Still, each of the 30 teams has its own record -- some of them much more inviting targets for current players. Here is a look at each club’s longest hitting streak

If for some reason you don't want to read the whole article; the Cardinals team record was set in 1922 by Rogers Hornsby at 33 games. Pete Rose's 44 game streak is the longest in the NL.

I remember when Pujols got to 30 games in 2003. I can't imagine another 27 games after that.

If he had, the Cardinals might have shown him a little more respect.

Cubs placed LHP Jon Lester on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.

A rare trip to the injured list for Lester, who has been a beacon of health in his time with the Red Sox, Cubs and (ever so briefly) the Athletics. The hope is that the 35-year-old will only miss a couple of starts, which would put him back in the Chicago rotation by the end of April. Tyler Chatwood is expected to get the starts for Lester in his absence.

The Dodgers placed catcher Russell Martin on the 10-day injured list with low back inflammation on Wednesday and recalled catcher Rocky Gale from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The White Sox have agreed to a deal with Elijah Tatis, a source confirmed to MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez. The club has not confirmed the deal, which was initially reported by ESPN’s Enrique Rojas.

The 17-year-old Dominican prospect is the son of former Major Leaguer Fernando Tatis and the brother of Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.

The youngster is known for his strong and accurate arm, and he has impressed scouts with the way the ball jumps off his bat, as well as his ability to square up fastballs.

Tatis Jr. was originally a member of the White Sox farm system as well, signing with the club in 2015 before being sent to the Padres alongside right-hander Erik Johnson in a 2016 trade for righty James Shields.

Tatis Jr., who was just 17 years old and hadn’t played a professional game at the time of the trade, has gone on to become the No. 2-ranked prospect in baseball. Tatis Jr. made his MLB debut on Opening Day this year.

The younger Tatis brother is eligible to sign during the current 2018-19 signing period, but could also wait until the 2019-20 period begins on July 2 to make the $500,000 agreement official.
Starter Luis Severino was diagnosed with a Grade 2 lat strain that will prevent him from throwing a ball for six weeks, the team announced prior to Tuesday’s game in Houston.

The injury is separate and independent from the rotator cuff inflammation Severino sustained during Spring Training. The lat strain emerged at some point between the diagnosis of that injury and his ongoing rehab process.
