With all due respect, isn’t Albies a better player? I like DeJong too, don’t get me wrong.

DeJong is 3 years older so apples to oranges, but they’ve been in the league the same amount of time (991 v 982 total plate appearamces) and DeJong has been more valuable and the better hitter thus far. How you value youth can vary, but it would be a lot closer conversation than some seem to think.

Also, 33 and phins have made this point more eloquently in the past than I can but there is an inherent over valuation of speed and defense in prospects. Like Bader. Everyone always thinks well surely he can find a 110 ops+ (or insert whatever slightly above average offensive stat you prefer here) and be a 5 win player. But in reality it’s probably more likely a slightly plus offensive guy runs into a few balls with the bat and on defense and puts upnthat 5 win season. Cough Ozuna cough.

Hitting is extremely difficult and the ability to do it well is valuable.

and it's not because they care about the owners' checkbooks.
Agents might just be looking out for themselves as opposed to the players best interest. Players can fire/change agents at any time. Albies' current agent gets next to nothing when he gets standard contract renewals and the longer it takes for Albies to get to arbitration or free agency the larger the risk that albies fires the agent and the agent misses out on getting a cut of the big payday. So if you are small agency and your client is going year-to-year you run the risk of being replaced before free agency. If you convince your client to take the guaranteed long term contract as an agent you hit your big payday.

This is the principal-agent problem in economics: the customer's interests and the agent's interests aren't identical, and there's always the risk that the agent will pursue self-interest at the expense of the customer. For instance, a person selling a house wants to get the most money possible, but a real estate agent wants to make a sale as quickly as possible and move on to the next house, and can wind up undercutting the seller.

Here is a link to a really good New Yorker article published several years ago about this: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2004 ... ed-motives

Apparently Craig Kimbrel, Derek Dietrich, Francisco Lindor, and a few other MLBers have the same agent as Albies. I say "apparently" because some of these guys are represented by "SportsMeter" and some of them are represented by "David Meter." But this is not Jerry Maguire here.

When Acuña signed his extension, there was a story that he borrowed money against his future earnings. That kind of situation also creates pressure on the player to sign these kinds of extensions.

Here's a video of the actual extension negotiation as it happened.

There definitely ain't no Sanity Clause in this contract.
