Batting just .229 through his first nine games for Triple-A Memphis this season, outfielder Drew Robinson wasn't expecting the call on Sunday night informing him that he was heading back to the Cardinals ahead of their three-game series at Milwaukee.

"When I saw [Memphis manager] Ben Johnson on the phone, I was kind of shocked," Robinson said. "That is how it works on [the] 40-man [roster]. Even if you aren’t playing as well, I have seen it before -- even in the Minor Leagues. There are only nine games, so you can’t go too much off that.”

Robinson played all over the field for the Redbirds. He saw action at second base, shortstop, center field and left field this season and will likely fill a similar role with St. Louis.

“Versatility," manager Mike Shildt said when asked what Robinson can provide. "He gives us a lefty off the bench, but also the ability to play outfield, including center and anywhere in the infield pretty much.”

Acquired last December from the Rangers, Robinson entered Monday's game hitting .201 with nine home runs and 22 RBIs in 249 career plate appearances in the Majors, including going 0-for-3 for the Cardinals earlier this season.
Harrison Bader, still bothered by a sore left hamstring, was not in the starting lineup for Monday's series opener at Milwaukee.

"Its still tight," Shildt said. "But he is doing a lot better and is checking all the boxes."
Carlos Martínez threw 20 pitches during a bullpen session Monday in St. Louis, just his second since he was shutdown with shoulder weakness a week into Spring Training.

"Everything checked out great," Shildt said. "He tried to mix in four-seam [fastballs] and two-seam. He tried to mix in some spin and off-speed pitches and felt great.”

Martinez will get a few days off before returning to action. Shildt said the right-hander will go through his usual progression of side sessions, then throw live batting practice, probably at the team's Spring Training facility in Jupiter, Fla.

Cardinals outfielder Tyler O'Neill will be re-evaluated Tuesday after he left Monday's 10-7 loss due to right arm soreness, just one inning after making a hard throw to the plate.

"He felt something grab or bother him on that throw that got away from him," Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. "We'll have a better idea in 24 hours."

In the bottom of the second inning, O'Neill tried to make a throw home on Freddy Peralta's RBI single. The throw, which clocked in at 96.7 mph, according to Statcast, sailed far past catcher Yadier Molina to the backstop.

O'Neill was making his second straight start in place of Harrison Bader, who has been sidelined with soreness in his right hamstring. Drew Robinson, recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Memphis, came on to pinch-hit for O'Neill in the third inning.

"The good thing is we don't think there's anything wrong structurally," Shildt said.

The Cardinals are also expected to be without reliever Mike Mayers after the left-hander felt some discomfort in his shoulder in the sixth inning

If the Cardinals want to snap their three-year postseason drought, they will likely need to find a way to get past the reigning National League Central Champion Brewers.

And to do that, the Cardinals will need to figure out a way to get Christian Yelich out.

The Cardinals have not had much luck in either department so far this season, dropping four of five meetings with their divisional rivals, including Monday's 10-7 loss at Miller Park behind three home runs from Yelich.

Yelich is 15-for-32 against St. Louis pitching this season with seven home runs and 15 RBIs. Cardinals pitchers have allowed a homer to Yelich in six straight games dating to last season, making him the first player since 1908 to homer in six consecutive games against the Cardinals. Yelich has 13 home runs against St. Louis since joining the Brewers in a January 2018 trade.

phew, the most productive hitter for MIL is woodruff
The Milwaukee Brewers are 6-2 at home this season and are solid favorites to beat the St. Louis Cardinals who are 4-5 on the road this season. The Brewers have a better than 55% chance of winning based on 10,000 game simulations generated one play at a time by the AccuScore Simulation Supercomputer. Brewers\' starter Brandon Woodruff is forecasted to have a better game than Cardinals\' starter Jack Flaherty. Brandon Woodruff has a 30% chance of having a Quality Start (QS) while Jack Flaherty has a 17% chance of a QS. If Brandon Woodruff has a quality start the Brewers has a 81% chance of winning. His simulated strikeout to walk ratio is 4.4 and he has a 34% chance of having a 5 to 1 K/BB ratio. When he has a 5/1 ratio the Brewers win 67%. In Jack Flaherty quality starts the Cardinals win 56%. He has a 29% chance of having a 5 to 1 K/BB ratio and if he does his team wins 56% of simulations. In simulations we tracked the batter for each team that was most productive based his average hits, walks and RBI per simulation. The most productive batter for the Milwaukee Brewers is Brandon Woodruff who averaged 3.11 hits+walks+RBI. He has a 66% chance of having a big game with 3+ Hits, Walks, RBI and if he has a big game the Brewers have a 73% chance of winning. The most productive batter for the St. Louis Cardinals is Paul Goldschmidt who averaged 2.42 hits+walks+RBI. He has a 42% chance of having a big game with 3+ Hits, Walks, RBI and if he has a big game the Cardinals have a 49% chance of winning.

The computer must be broken, because there's smoke blowing out of that A.S.S.

I hope that we don't have to start Drew Robinson in CF for more then a game.

Whether or not Drew Robinson can make contact with a baseball seems more relevant than which side he bats.

Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said after Monday's game that Tyler O'Neill is nursing a sore right elbow, but the team doesn't think anything structurally is wrong.

The club will know more when O'Neill is re-evaluated Tuesday, but it sounds like a day-to-day type injury. Harrison Bader (hamstring) is also banged up, so the Cards might need to promote an outfielder even if they don't deem either injury serious.

Mike Mayers departed Monday's appearance against the Brewers with a cramp under his right armpit.

Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said after the game that the reliever is likely headed to the injured list. It's unclear how long he might be sidelined.
