He might shock us all and win the Cy someday...but for now...

The new starter has a 6.35 ERA over nine Triple-A appearances?

Cabrera is very well regarded. He has an incredible fastball, but iffy command. He's a 22 year old in AAA already if that tells you how quickly he's run through the minors. Started out pretty rough but he's had several good outings in a row. Generally, it's probably a good idea to ignore ERA in hit and homer happy PCL.

It probably should be Gomber and I would not have argued with Helsley either, but I'm excited to get a look at Cabrera. He could have a strong future for the Cards. I would put him about the same as Sandy Alcantara the season he was moved as the centerpiece for Ozuna.

i dont think you can ignore results in "hit and homer friendly PCL" considering they are using major leagues balls this year.

I'm not saying we should ignore results or even that Cabrera's results have been great. But, judging Cabrera on his ERA alone doesn't tell us anything, particularly in the PCL (at least historically). He's here because he has great stuff and the Cardinals really like him. That's the message I was trying to get across.

6.35 is pretty damn close to league average in the PCL this year.

Are we sure this is not a matchup thing with the Phillies and nothing more...

His peripherals at the moment, with K/BB being about 2.29 for his entire minor league career and decent HR rate at 0.87, aren't great. Bottom 5% of starters in the league for past 3 years if you think that translates to MLB. Efficiency also a problem for him. Throws lots of pitches to get an out.

So he's about right at replacement level, in other words.

Nothing more ... like what? He's up. He's getting a start. That's about as far as anyone has gone so far with Cabrera. I'm excited to get to see him pitch, which I haven't had a chance to do yet (maybe I caught an inning or two in ST).

But, the Cards' have made their thoughts about him as a prospect pretty clear and it doesn't really surprise me, considering the comments they've filtered out through the media, that they are going to him over more obvious candidates in Helsley and especially Gomber. If you were looking solely for a lefty to matchup with the Phillies, Gomber would be the guy. It's just my opinion, but I think the Cards know what they have with Gomber and aren't excited about it, as he really had no chance this season or even ST to displace Hudson despite decent results in the majors. They know where they want Helsley - which is pretty clearly the pen. (Personally, I would love to see Helsley get some starts.) And I think they want to get a closer look at Cabrera because they think he actually could be an impact lefty. I've seen several MiLB analysts point to Cabrera as a darkhorse candidate for impact production. So, one game now, working with the staff and getting some mound time. Maybe that's it for awhile. But, I think the Cards hope this one game now could lead to more later come end of season or playoff time.

Edit: Also didn't realize that Gomber just suffered an injury. But, they are picking Cabrera over deLeon and Woodford as well.

Nothing more meaning, why he's selected over others on the roster in AAA.

I don't see much difference between Helsley and Cabrera in terms of peripherals/overall value.

Also don't they have to consider who's turn it is in the rotation at AAA?

Pretty clearly a move to inflate the value of their return for Pham (a trade that continues to not make sense) and nothing more.
