In the bottom of the first inning Tuesday night, Jack Flaherty walked to the back of the mound at T-Mobile Park and bent down. He scratched in seven letters, and when he was done, he patted the dirt twice, patted his chest twice and pointed to the sky.

Every so often, he glanced at the letters before taking a deep breath and winding into his delivery. He repeated the routine -- pat the mound, pat his chest, point to the sky -- before every inning he pitched in the Cardinals’ 5-4 loss in Tuesday’s series opener against the Mariners.

The letters spelled out a name: TSkaggs. The gesture was Flaherty’s way of honoring close friend Tyler Skaggs, the 27-year-old Angels pitcher who passed away Monday.

Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said before the game that he had talked to Flaherty about not starting Tuesday in Seattle.

But there was no way that Flaherty wasn’t going to pitch.

“It felt really good to be out there,” Flaherty said. “I felt like that was the only way -- I never felt like taking the night off or pushing it back a day. It just wouldn’t have felt right.”

The Cardinals' right-hander -- who had “RIP TSkaggs” written along the outer part of his cleats -- struggled with command early, but kept the score within striking distance for St. Louis' offense, which tied the game in the seventh on Yairo Munoz’s two-run home run.

Flaherty gave up four runs in 4 2/3 innings while walking four. A 39-pitch second inning when he walked in a run cost him, but he struck out seven.

“Jack gutted it out with a heavy heart,” Shildt said. “He wanted to pitch, and clearly those are tough circumstances. Somebody close to you, he was a big part of Jack’s life, helped mentor Jack to some degree, they were close. That’s got to be -- I couldn’t imagine. That’s a tough thing, especially for a young person.”
Matt Carpenter will spend the games leading up to the All-Star break on the injured list with a lower back strain that he sustained while recovering from an illness.

In a corresponding move, reliever John Brebbia was activated from the paternity list.

Carpenter had been out of the lineup for the past four games, the first three to regroup and work on his swing and the fourth against the Padres because of illness. He was dehydrated and bedridden for more than 40 hours over the past two days, and he tweaked his back Sunday while moving around. He and manager Mike Shildt said that Carpenter could have been back by the time the Cardinals go to San Francisco this weekend, but they didn’t want to risk it.

“We were in a situation where there were six games left before the All-Star break,” Carpenter said. “I thought I probably could be ready in a couple of days, but given the situation, I thought it would be better coming off the sickness and back to just be smart about it and be ready to go after the break.”
Marcell Ozuna (fractured right fingers) saw a hand specialist in St. Louis, but there isn’t a timetable yet on his return. Shildt said that as soon as Ozuna gets his strength back in his fingers, which he jammed during a pickoff play Friday in San Diego, he’ll be ready to return.

all i did was find and replace car with team and i think it still basically works ...tho part of me wishes i had more to time to adjust it towards baseball
"Ode To My Team" - Adam Sandler

Here we go

Piece of [expletive] team
I got a piece of [expletive] team
That [expletive]' pile of [expletive]
Never gets me very far

My team's a big piece of [expletive]
'Cause the shocks are [expletive] shot
And my seatbelt's [expletive] broken
I got to tie it in a knot
(It's a piece of [expletive])

I can't see through the windshield
'Cause it's got a big [expletive]' crack
And the interior smells real bad
'Cause my friend puked in the back
(It's a piece of [expletive])

(Piece of [expletive] team)
Piece of [expletive] team
(He's got a piece of [expletive] team)
It sucks royal dick
(That [expletive]' pile of [expletive])
100% crap
(Never gets him very far)
Oh [expletive] you team

It's got no CD player, it only got the 8-track
Whoever designed my team can lick my sweaty nut sack
(They can bite his ass too)
And I got no [expletive]' brakes
I'm always way out of control
Eleven times a day I hear "Hey, watch it [expletive]"
(You [expletive]' piece of [expletive])

(Piece of [expletive] team)
I got piece of [expletive] team
(He got a piece of [expletive] team)
Diesel gas sucks my ass
(That [expletive]' pile of [expletive])
That pile of metal [expletive]
(Never gets him very far)

Oh what the [expletive] did I do
What the [expletive] did I do
What the [expletive] did I do
To get stuck with you
You're too wide for drive-through
And you smell like the shoe
But I'm too broke to buy something new
Oh [expletive] me

Well the engine likes to flood
The team always [expletive]' stalls
And the seat cushion's got a big rip
So a spring always pokes the balls
(Ouch, ouch, ouch)
Plus the door locks are busted
I gotta use a [expletive] coat hanger
(What a pain in his ass)
And if a girlie sees my team
There's no chance I'll ever bang her
(He never ever gets the [expletive])
Hey shut up
(Piece of [expletive] team)
You piece of [expletive] team

(You got a piece of [expletive] team)
You piece of [expletive] team
(Piece of [expletive] team)
Bald [expletive]' tires
(You got a piece of [expletive] team)
No rearview [expletive] mirror
(Piece of [expletive] team)
Seven different colors
(You got a piece of [expletive] team)
[expletive] rag for a gas cap
(Piece of [expletive] team)
Tailpipe makes the sparks fly everywhere
(You got a piece of [expletive] team)
(Piece of [expletive] team)
(You got a piece of [expletive] team)
(Piece of [expletive] team)
Oh the whole town thinks I'm a loser
(You got a piece of [expletive] team)
Cabby give me a push
(Piece of [expletive] team...)

lol man i couldn't remember who we got back from the mariners in the mike leake trade and theres a good reason for that...it's because we got back some scrub who is withering away in our system.

I get it was a salary dump, but here's thing--we sent them $750,000 in international cap space AND $17 mil.

But hey, i guess the money saved on the Leake deal netted us miller and goldy deals. nice....nice......
