Atlantic League: Computer Zone and New Rules

Post by Joe Shlabotnik »

Atlantic League Debuts New Rules, E-Zone

Using computers for strike zone and...

Rules:
1. Pitchers Required to Step Off Rubber to Attempt Pickoff
2. One Foul Bunt Permitted with Two Strikes
3. Batters May Steal First Base On Any Uncaught Pitch
4. "Check Swings" Now Requires a Break of the Wrist

What do you think?

Here's one of the first called-third strikes by the computer:

What is the point of making pitchers step off the rubber to try a pick off? All the other ones I can at least see some logic behind them (even if I don't like it necessarily). I'm not sure that that first change will accomplish other than fewer pick offs.

More steals I guess.

More steals is the goal

So a first pitch wild pitch could allow the runner to steal first base? Bader might get a nice bump to his OPS.

That was a great call by the computer, imo. Crazy they have a computer analyzing flight paths of pitches going 90+ mph in order to determine balls and strikes but are recording it with a handheld vhs that people in the 1990s would consider trash.

How is it ruled? It's a strikeout for both sides now. Is that not the case now? Need to know official ruling to know how it'd affect OPS.

Is rule 2 a shift-buster?

Good question! Not a strikeout because its not the third strike. Any pitch - ball or strike - that isn't caught by the catcher can be advanced on. I guess you'd score it a BB or maybe they'll come up with a new name for it. Nor a SB since that wouldn't count in OBP.
