Michael Wacha will pitch out of the bullpen for the time being and Daniel Ponce de Leon will take over his rotation spot starting Wednesday against the Pirates.

In 16 games this season, Wacha is 5-4 with a 5.54 ERA. He came out of the bullpen for two of those games, May 29 and June 4, allowing six runs on five hits in one inning in the former and tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in the latter. His return to the rotation afterward has been inconsistent. Wacha allowed four runs over 3 1/3 frames during his last start, July 4 in Seattle, before he was replaced by Ponce de Leon.

Just prior to that, Wacha had worked seven innings against the Padres and allowed just two runs.

Marcell Ozuna (fractured right middle finger) is still dealing with swelling in his hand and said he hasn’t been able to test his grip strength much. The Cardinals are hoping for a return by end of July, but Ozuna said he wasn’t sure of a timetable.

Jedd Gyorko used the time he is on the injured list with a left calf strain to have minor arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist. But the timetable for the utility infielder’s return might be longer than expected. Shildt said Sunday that Gyorko, who is in St. Louis getting treatment, might not be ready to return until the middle or end of August. The Cardinals will evaluate more in a month, but Shildt didn’t disagree that it might be hard to see Gyorko back before Sept 1.

“Rehab might be a little tough at that point,” Shildt said. “We’ll create some opportunities for him. He’s going to have to go play somewhere and get at-bats, and get on the field and be a baseball player. He’s dealing with the wrist, calf, healing in general.”

Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of Mike Matheny’s dismissal following an 8-2 Cardinals loss to the Reds and Shildt taking over as interim manager. The Cardinals removed the interim tag on Shildt’s title 45 days later and signed him to three-year contract that runs through 2020.

Quote:
Sunday marked Goldschmidt's second career homer against Arizona's Zack Greinke, who had previously held the slugger to a .174 average (4-for-23) with 12 strikeouts. Goldschmidt's other roundtripper against his former teammate came Oct. 2, 2011, in Game 2 of the National League Division Series, when he played for the D-backs and Greinke was with the Brewers.

Goldschmidt also singled in the first inning Sunday to finish 2-for-4.

Sunday’s results were more hard evidence for what Goldschmidt and St. Louis manager Mike Shildt have seen over the past three weeks as the former works his way out of a slump that gave him the worst first half of his career.

Goldschmidt has raised his slugging percentage from .404 to .428 since the beginning of July with three home runs. Shildt said Saturday that Goldschmidt was in as good of a place offensively as he was during the beginning of the season, when he had nine home runs in March and April combined.

“Results were better, to get a home run and another hit, but me, individually, I have to do it the whole rest of the second half,” Goldschmidt said. “You can't just do it one game. I think that's the key for us as a team, to show up and do it every day. We've played good for a day or a series, but to win the division or get in the playoffs as a wild card, we're going to have to do it basically every game through the end of the year.”

Goldschmidt knows much of the onus falls on him to produce in an offense that has been stagnant since the beginning of June.

“It's not like it's added pressure, it's just the truth,” he said. “It will take a team effort, but every individual that plays better, it helps the team. I'm trying to do everything in my power to play my best and help us win.”

How many Cardinals do the Pirates hit this series? More than two?

Cards did about what we could have asked against the DBacks. Just played relatively normal ball and won 2-3 at home. Needs to continue now. Continuing to get 2-3 of a must and a sweep at some point between now and the end of July would put us in position to make good decisions at the break.

Excited about a long stretch of ball. Everyday a chance for gains.
