If only it was the playoffs, Kershaw would be toast.

What comes next with the fifth starter spot? The Cardinals could stick with Wacha or turn to a Triple-A option, like Daniel Ponce de Leon again or Jake Woodford, who gave up four runs in six innings for the Redbirds on Friday.

Right now, it’s too soon to make a call, Shildt said, but the Cardinals will assess Wacha’s outing and move forward from there.

“We’ll take a little deeper dive into looking at the stuff and execution and realize that maybe it was more pitches than we think, maybe it was just a few pitches they put swings on,” Shildt said. “You don’t want to overreact to it, but clearly, we don’t want to underreact to it.”

After going 1-for-2 on Saturday, Bader went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on Sunday against El Paso (Padres). Bader was optioned to Memphis on July 30 after posting career lows in batting average (.195) and slugging percentage (.339). The Cardinals sent him to Memphis for consistent at-bats as he searches for the rhythm of his swing again.

“The reports have been positive,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. “Candidly, that’s about as far as I can take it from the game reports and feedback. He’s getting more consistent with his approach and what he’s working on, which is the reason he’s there.”

Left fielder Tyler O'Neill is in St. Louis as he treats the left wrist strain that he sustained in his last at-bat Wednesday against the Cubs. Shildt said he’s heard positive feedback on O'Neill's progress.

The Cardinals are hoping that O’Neill will be able to get in a few games on a rehab assignment before his 10 days on the injured list are over. O’Neill, who was put on the injured list retroactive to Aug. 1, can be activated as early as Sunday against the Pirates.

“He’s getting better,” Shildt said. “It’s going to be interesting as to if he can get some games in before those 10 days are up. We’re not sure what that looks like yet. But we’re not pushing it.”

Quote:
Alex Reyes, on the Memphis injured list with a right pectoral strain, threw a bullpen Monday after returning to throwing off the mound last week. The Cardinals are still hopeful that Reyes can return to the big leagues by the end of the season.

Quote:
Wednesday afternoon’s series finale against the Dodgers will be broadcast live on YouTube at 2:10 p.m. CT as part of the MLB Game of the Week Live on YouTube package that began on July 18 and includes free live broadcasts of 13 games during the second half of the regular season.

Former Cardinals pitcher Jason Marquis will join the broadcast crew of announcer Rich Waltz, Dodgers analyst Nomar Garciaparra and Dodgers reporter Alanna Rizzo to call the game from Dodger Stadium.

Mejia might be a really great teammate.
