Paul DeJong worked a little bit of magic in the first inning of Tuesday’s 1-0 win over the Giants.
His first at-bat against Dereck Rodriguez ended with a hit, which first bounced into foul territory, but then took a hard spin to the infield. DeJong recognized the trajectory of the ball and ran hard to first base to load the bases before Giants first baseman Brandon Belt could grab the ball.
“I’ve seen that, but not to that degree,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “That was unbelievable. You can’t do that on a pool table.”
The Cardinals' dugout went crazy, jumping up and down, clapping and encouraging DeJong after the hit. He even seemed a little stunned by it himself, and he shook his head as he looked up to the scoreboard to watch the replay.
Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said he’s seen it before, too, on a play down the third-base line. But what Shildt was most impressed with was DeJong’s awareness to get to first base.
On the day that Jack Flaherty won the National League Pitcher of the Month Award for August, he continued his dominance into September.
Flaherty’s one-hit, eight-inning effort gave the Cardinals a 1-0 win over the Giants on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium, continuing both Flaherty’s success and the success for the Cardinals, who have won 20 of their last 25 games.
Flaherty made 15 starts this season pitching six innings or more while holding his opposition to four hits or fewer -- the most in the National League and third in the Majors behind Cy Young candidates Justin Verlander (18) and Gerrit Cole (16).
That’s a Cy Young Award-caliber second half for Flaherty, and it’s coming at the right time for the Cardinals. The 23-year-old has blossomed into the anchor of the rotation as the Cardinals try to find their way back to the playoffs for the first time since 2015.

Maybe the earliest. He's the second from the left in the middle row in the picture of the 1883 NY Gothams - their first year in the National League. Tip helped start the Cardinals-Cubs rivalry by tying the Chicago White Stockings in the 1885 World Series and then beating them in 1886. He then won the Cardinals' (Browns at the time) first Triple Crown in 1887.

I am oddly confident about this game. I've just gotten so used to winning that I think we're going to win every time out.

I miss the completely sincere, unironic baseball mustache.
